dc.description.abstractThis research aims to identify the foundations of Ethiopian language policy and evaluate its effectiveness in terms of educational quality and social coexistence, and examine the problems and challenges, starting with issues related to the use of the mother tongue in primary education, up to its impact on the education system and social dynamics. The 1995 Ethiopian Constitution establishes a federal republic with regions based on ethnic groups. The Ethiopian language policy, as indicated on the constitution, grants to regions the choice of official languages, which has been linked with the problems of inclusivity and linguistic and ethnic antagonism. Ethiopia has adopted an education policy allowing the use of the mother tongue in primary education, followed by English as the language of instruction for secondary and higher education. However, this has created complex challenges, such as the transition to Amharic and English present educational challenges, impacting Ethiopia's education quality. Ethiopia's education quality is a burning issue, with a low percentage of students qualifying for higher education. The language policy favoring local languages over a common language of instruction creates learning obstacles for all. Barriers of language in educational achievements This study adopts a qualitative and descriptive approach, analyzing legal documents and existing research on the subject. The methodology involves describing and explaining language policy concepts, focusing on the legislative documents on language policy and its practical, social and educational implications. In conclusion, this research will provide crucial insights to assess the effectiveness of Ethiopian language policy and propose solutions to the challenges faced in education and social coexistence.
