With increasing focus on economic as well as environmentally friendly means for mass transit, electric rail transport is getting renewed momentum in Ethiopia. The feeding of heavy rolling stock from AC grids cause unacceptable voltage drops, high reactive current, low power factor and asymmetry between phases of the feeding grid. The reactive current raises the dissipation of power in the network and depresses the power supply capability of supply network. The aim of this thesis is to design and simulate static Var compensator connected in shunt that offers means of remedy to these problems. Static var compensator (SVC) is basically a shunt connected static var generator whose output is adjusted to exchange capacitive or inductive current so as to maintain or control power variables. The modeling of Sebeta-Dewele power network is done and simulated with and without applying reactive power compensation. A power flow analysis is done to determine the placement of the compensator. A compensator is installed at Wachulalu, Haro and Meiso. The reactive power loss is minimized, and the terminal voltage is kept 0.975 pu after compensation is done. The rest of traction substations don‟t require a compensator. A PI controller is used to control the firing angle of thyrstor control reactor of the static Var compensator and achieve better and smooth control of reactive power. A Matlab Simulink is used to simulate the system. The power flow is done by using newton raphson iterative method on powerworld simulating software.en_US
