Abstract
This Thesis Investigates Compressed Air Engine starting system for light Diesel Electrical
Passenger Locomotive. Most Internal combustion engines are usually started by means of
Electrical starting arrangements. The heavy diesel engines are starting with compressed air, this
compressed Air Engine starting system coupled to the engine flywheel, or to inject the
compressed air directly into the engine cylinders through a slashing valve, but our Thesis
consider on the compressed air Engine starting system directly inject into Engine cylinder.
compressed Air Engine starting systems are an additional starting system mounted on locomotive
when an Electrical starting system is failed compressed air starting system comes into operation.
The main advantage related to compressed air engine starting for light Diesel Electrical
Locomotive fueled engines, is to avoid traffic delay when battery system or electrical starting
system not working properly.
Light Diesel-Electrical passenger Locomotive Engines during compressed air starting the
capacity or the amount of compressed air regulated by pressure control valve and pressure
reduced valve. In this Thesis, analytical method, modeling of the system and simulation method
by software of compressed air Engine starting system for light Diesel Electrical Locomotive
( third stage air compressor, air filter, air cylinder, pressure control valve, pressure reducing
valve, electro pneumatic valve, Air distributer and air starting valve) are developed and validated
against other application area of the system.
The objective of our research for Investigating compressed air Engine starting system for light
Diesel Electrical Locomotive, by method of numerical Analysis, modeling(CATIA and
AutoCAD) and computer simulations(ANSYS workbench), the system existing on other area
but can be possible to adopt Railway Industry.
