Abstract

This study assesses the Micro hydropower potential of theAdaba sub catchment in UpperWabishebele basin. HEC-GeoHMS and Arc Hydro tools coupled with Arc GIS 10.2 were used for watershed analysis and relate with the HEC-HMS model to simulate the rainfall-runoff processes after parameters for losses, runoff transform, & open channel routing were estimated. The model was calibrated & validated for the period 1984-1986, & 1987-1989 respectively, the performance of the model was evaluated using the statistical tools such as Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE), Coefficient of determination (R2), Percent Volume Error (PVE), and percent error in simulated peak (PEP). After the potential site was selected & the gross head was determined the discharges of these sites were transferred from the model by Area-ratio method. Then Flow duration curves were prepared for each site. A total of 17 points were determined& the total potential capacity was found to be 8.04 MW. In addition to this appropriate type of scheme was proposed & all of them turned to be Diversion & canal hydropower plant. In order to facilitate favorable condition for local decision makers as to which sites should be given the top priority the potential sites have been ranked considering different criteria.
