Abstract

NGOs in collaboration with Oromia Education Bureau were involved In implementation of ABE curriculum with the intention of expanding access to education and attaining equity towards access to educational opportunity towards the realization of universal primary education. But, the situation of curriculum implementation of NGOs supported ABE centers in maintaining quality education has not been significantly furnished with adequate study. To this effect, this study alms to assess the situation of curriculum implementation of ABE in North Shoa and South West Shoa Zones of Oromia in terms of practice and constraints by taking the experiences of supporting NGOs. This study has briefly analyzed and systematized relevant information as well as research findings of others in the review of related literature. A descriptive survey research method was employed to conduct this study. Eight centers were selected purposefully from two zones of Oromia; and a representative sample of 100 (62.5%) of respondents were involved in the study. Data were collected from informants through questionnaire, interview and focus group discussion. The data collected through questionnaire were analyzed USIng percentages, and that of interviews were analyzed in narration . Results of the study showed that there were improvements In curriculum materials preparation and provision. Beside, community participation was observed in supporting ABE centers. In contrary, female facilitators were not adequately represented in implementation, and there was inadequacy of training and supports for facilitators. Furthermore, administrators and coordinators lacked commitment in implementation, and there was lack of involvement by concerned body as a team in preparation of curriculum. It is suggested that stakeholders of ABE in North Shoa and South West Shoa Zoens of Oromia should identify factors affecting the implementation of ABE curriculum and plan to address them during implementation.
