Abstract
The Purpose of this study was to assess the adult learners’ perception on social and economic benefits of IFAL Program; the case of Akaki Kaliry sub city Woreda one. Mixed methods of research design were employed; both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered through questionnaire, interviews and document analysis. The pilot test was conducted in the selected two centers on woreda two. The IFAL centers were selected using purposive sampling and the facilitators and learners were selected using table of sample size determination following purposive sampling techniques. Out of 195 the total sample size the population, 60 (34 %) IFAL learners, 10 (83.33%) facilitators and three (3) IFAL program coordinators filled in and returned the questionnaire. In addition, two woreda and sub city IFAL supervisors were interviewed totally 75 subjects were included. The collected data were analyzed using frequencies and percentages. Some of the major findings were: Mostly IFAL program learners have an awareness of the program and most of them devoted in attending the program, the lesson are related with their daily life but according to students response the program is not assessed continuously; this idea is contradicting with the coordinators response, those students who attend this program mostly benefited in improving their saving habits, productivity because of the literacy skills use as input for their success even though some of the learners were not able to be beneficial participating in the policy that affect the economy of their community, and these Literacy skills sensitize them to cooperate with the community and it also helps them to have a capability to solve social problems and being accountable within community even though some of the IFAL learners lack capability of solving social problem. The literacy skill program develops the learner living together in peace and harmony. Moreover it also enhances them to preserve and continue good culture of the community and to remove the harmful culture of the community. The major challenges identified, Most of students did not come to school regularly, Drop out of the students by their personal problem, Lack of financial support to generate income ,Absence of adequate teaching-learning materials and others supplementary materials and lack of cooperation with stake holders. Thus, to improve the situation, it is recommended that: all stake holders should play their own role properly, the responsible bodies should help by supplying the adequate teaching-learning material, and all the stake holders should work cooperatively
