Abstract
Food irradiation is the processing of food products by ionizing radiation in order
to control food borne pathogens, reduce microbial load and insect infestation,
inhibit the germination of root crops and extend the durable life of perishable
produce.
The treatment of food with ionizing energy benefits food producers,
manufacturers and consumers. It can extend the shelf life of animal or plant
products by destroying spoilage organisms. It can destroy pathogenic
microorganisms and parasites in frozen, fresh and processed foods, thereby
reducing the incidence of food- borne diseases.
This study reviewed global practice of food irradiation, determination dose of
Food Irradiation, Ethiopian food items, possible application food irradiation in
Ethiopia and its impact on food security for Ethiopia. The hazards posed to
consumers as a result of consumption of irradiated food reviewed.
