Abstract

This paper presents a web-based expert system for Teff crop in Ethiopia. Teff is one of the major cereal crops in Ethiopia. It is cultivated in vast areas and ranked first with regard to its area of coverage compared to other cereal crops of the country. In Ethiopia, farmers obtain information about new agricultural technologies from agricultural extension workers who occupy a strategic position in the agricultural production cycle. They mediate between the farmers and researchers. The extension workers obtain information about Teff improved technologies when extension documents are distributed. This way of information transfer has its own limitation. The information is static, not easily available and may not respond to users‟ specific needs since the documents give general recommendation. During this situation the extension workers look for agricultural experts‟ assistance. But experts are not always available. This project is an effort in solving the problems faced by the extension workers when the services of the experts are not available. In this project a web based expert system has been developed. The system would help users to easily select appropriate Teff varieties which reflects their agro ecological zone and their interest, and also provides proper consultation in relation to identifying the causes of the crop disorder and recommending possible measures to be taken. The system has been evaluated by domain experts and extension workers. The analysis of the result shows that the system is acceptable.
