Abstract
This study examines the challenges of Customs on trade facilitation, specifically the
Customs clearing process in Ethiopia. The study focuses on assessing to identify
problems and the reason behind those problems, which have negative contribution on the
time length of clearing process
The study adopts a mixed method research approach to answer the research questions
that come out from the review of the existing literature. Particularly, the study uses
survey of employees of the Customs, importers, third parties clearing agents, interview
with Customs officials and documentary analysis. The study statistically analysis the data
bring forth from the survey. It also analysis the result of the interview with Customs
officials’ and inspection of documents held by the Customs office.
The result of this methodology shows that the Customs clearing time taken for a
document is quite long in Ethiopia, which adversely affects the trade facilitation.
Moreover, the problems for delays of clearing process and reason behind these problems
have also identified.
The thesis forwards a series of measures to be taken by the authority (ERCA), importers
and clearing agents
