Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not 3rd year Bahir,
University English major students made strive towards autonomous learning.
The study particularly aimed at examining students' use of cognitive,
meta cognitive, self-assessment and self-access learning strategies.
To this effect, two techniques of data collection instruments were devised:
questionnaire and interviews. Open ended and close ended questionnaire were
distributed to 60 students and interview was held with 10 students.
The data obtained from the questionnaire and interviews were analyzed. The
results of the analysis revealed that the subjects use cognitive strategies in
their language learning process frequently. However, the subjects employ meta cognitive
strategies rarely. It was also found out that the students lack the
ability to self-assess their progress and reflect back up on their learning
process. Furthermore, it was indicated that the subjects participate in outside
classroom listening frequently since it holds learners' attention. On the
contrary, they participate in outside classroom speaking and reading rarely.
On the basis of these results, it is recommended that the students need to be
trained to be aware of the value of using learning strategies reflection and
outside classroom learning and how to use them effectively so that they can
make a meaningful progress towards autonomy.
