Abstract

The aim of thi.s study ,vas to assess the frequencies of syncytlum~tnducing and non~ syncytium-inducing HIY -, subtype C isolate. obtained from Ethiopian AIDS patient •. Forty.eight hospitalized AIDS patients (CD4 + T cell count. < 100 cel\s/~ll) with WHO revised conditions of stagtng system criteria for HIV"'1 i.nfection and disease Hsted in stage III and IY were used. The biological phenotype. of the viruses were determined by MT5Z cocultivation ,21§say. Lymph.ocyte subsets were enumerated using coulter counter and FAC§can analysts. Vi.:ra .• load determination was done by nucleic add sequence ba.ed amplification assay (NASBA). HIY -, i.olates with syncytium-inducing phenotype were detected only in 3/48(6%) of AIDS patient •. Lower distribution of absolute CD4+ cell counts and CD4/CD8 r3t[0 were determined in 51 carriers as compared to N§l carders (P=O.04 and 0.03, respectively). However, no difference in viral load w.s observed between SI and NSI patients (P>o.OS). SI patients had higher di.tribution of irnrnune.complexed dissociated HIY-\ p24 levels than N§I patients (P=o.oZ). Both patients with SI and N§I variant. had comparable CDS+ T cell counts (P=o.~). This finding suggests that the prevalence of 51 viruses among Ethiopian Co SIJIbtype AIDS patients was .ignificantly lower than among AIDS patients infected with other subtypes.
