Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the roles of teachers and learners in relation to the introduction of the new Freshman English materials. The study involved 180 students and 19 teachers from two campuses. Of the 19 sections chosen by the project committee for the piloting of the new materials 6 sections were involved in this study: three from Sidist Kilo and three from Arat Kilo campuses. All the 19 teachers who were teaching the new materials were involved in the study. The major instruments used in this study were questionnaires and an interview. One questionnaire which attempted to find out students' previous perceptions of a teacher's role, students' preferences for ways of learning, students' assessment of the new modes of organization and the tasks in the new materials, was designed for and administered to students in the study sample. Another questionnaire that attempted to find out teachers' perceptions of their roles, teachers' perceptions of how students perceived the roles of teachers teaching the new materials and teachers' perceptions of teaching materials, was designed for and administered to teachers. To consolidate or refute the information obtained through the questionnaire, an interview was also conducted with the,. students in the study sample. Classroom observations were also employed to get some insights into how the teachers and learners made use of the tasks in the new materials. The study showed that the students were very optimistic about the tasks, the new modes of organization and their new roles implied by the new materials. The study also showed that the teachers assessed more positively their roles in the more recent approaches than their roles In the traditional approaches. As a whole, the study showed that both the teachers and the students demonstrated a gradual shift from the perceptions of their more traditional roles as teachers and learners.
