Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to examine the effect of physical working environment on employee motivation to work in Addis Ababa Mass Media Agency by identifying three variables to be investigated in the study (office layout, office design and technology). This study was guided by the general objective of examining the relationship between the physical working environment and employee motivation. An explanatory research design was adopted with Addis Ababa Mass Media Agency being the focus organization. The population of the study comprised all professional workers of the organization. A stratified sampling technique was applied to select a sample of 70 from 491 total number of population. The data collecting instrument was a structured questionnaire with all close- ended questions developed by the researcher. The questionnaire made use of a five -point Likert scale to rate the importance of physical working environment factors. The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version22.From descriptive, frequency, mean and standard deviation, and from inferential, correlation and regression analysis were used while analyzing the data. The result of correlation analysis revealed that office layout and technology have a moderate relationship with employee motivation. Beta coefficient result showed office layout and technology influenced in bringing variation in employee motivation. But, the significance value of technology was found insignificant. In general, the research concluded that the physical environment factors are not highly important to affect employee motivation in Addis Ababa Mass Media Agency
