Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to investigate factors that affect students‟ paragraph writing skills. The study was conducted in Werha Yekatit Primary School. In order to address the problem a mixed research method which contains both qualitative and quantitative method of data collection and analysis was employed. To achieve the first objective of study, paragraph writing test was used. To address, the second, the third and the fourth objectives textbook and teacher‟s guide analysis, classroom observation and teaches' semi-structural interview were used. The researcher analyzed the paragraphs written by 40 students. Analysis of textbook and teacher‟s guide was used mainly to assess the activities related to paragraph writing. Classroom observation conducted to assess how much the teachers emphasized teaching paragraph writing. Two teachers were observed while they were teaching writing lesson. The semi-structural interview was employed to triangulate the information gained from the students about the factors for students‟ poor paragraph writing and gain data about students‟ paragraph writing problems. The data was used to identify the factors affecting students‟ paragraph writing problems and the kind of problems students had in paragraph writing. All data collected from the different instruments were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively
