Abstract

Ionic liquids are salts with low melting points (<100 0C). Since ionic liquids exhibit extremely low vapor pressures, they do not release VOCs to the environment; and have positive impact on ecological and environmental effect during synthesis and processing of chemicals. They provide good solubility for a wide range of reactions, their design for use as solvents can serve both for immobilization and coordinating ligands for the catalyst in processes involving homogeneous catalysis. This can be addressed by synthesizing ionic liquids with functional groups that can complex the metal centers. To this effect, they are called designer and eco-friendly solvents. These interesting compounds are achieved either by incorporating a bulky, asymmetric Nheterocyclic cation into the structure through quaternization process in order to preclude good crystal packing and/or by selecting an anion in which there is considerable delocalization of the electron cloud over the molecular backbone that tends to decrease interionic interaction, example-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide. Therefore the main objective of this project is to synthesize such important ionic liquids based on 4,4’-bipyridine heterocycles through quaternization with alkyl halides which are applicable in homogeneous catalysis as solvents, solvent and ligand, and electrochemical uses in electrodeposition. As a result of this quaternization reaction monoalkylation has been successfully done in which the products were confirmed by Spectroscopic techniques, analytical data (elemental analysis) and different physical techniques having melting point of almost higher than 2000C. After metathesis process the melting point of the prepared ILs have <800C which fulfills the first criteria to be true ILs with melting point of <1000C.
