Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate causes of teachers’ turnover in private schools of
Bole sub city of Addis Ababa. To accomplish this purpose descriptive survey design was
employed. The study was carried out in eight purposively selected primary schools of Bole Sub
city of Addis Ababa. From these schools 40 current teachers were selected randomly whereas 20
ex teachers and 8 school principals were selected by purposive sampling techniques. The main
instruments of data collection for this study were questioners, interview and document analysis.
Then the data gathered was presented, analysed and interpreted by using a mixture of
quantitative and qualitative data descriptive method by using percentage and mean in table and
qualitative explanation used by computing the data on SPSS version 20.The results of the study
revealed that the major causes of teacher turnover in private school of Bole sub city of Addis
Ababa were inadequate teaching salary, unfair treatments of teachers from school principals,
high burden of work load on teachers, teachers low salary compared to non- teaching
profession, low recognition and respect for teachers by the society. Furthermore, frequent
teacher turnover affected the proper attainment of school goals and objectives and overburdened
the existing teachers. As a result, teachers’ turnover highly affects the quality education in
private school of Bole sub city.On the basis of these findings, the study forwarded some
recommendations to minimize teachers’ turnover through creating awareness raising conference
for all private school principals and management to consider all the causes of teacher turnover,
Private school owners need to improve the salary of teaches and all stakeholders create
awareness in the society that teaching is a noble profession
