Abstract
Thepurpose of study was to assesstraining and development practice and challenges in Addis Ababa
University School of commerce. The study used mixed approach which enables to use quantitative and
qualitative data in order to provide a comprehensive analysis of the research problem. Tothis end,
Descriptive design was used. Data were gathered from support staff employees of a total number of 144,
of these 105 employees were randomly selected in a lottery method. Were as purposively two employees
were taken for interview. In addition to the main data collecting tools, interview, observation and
document analysis were also used to help supplement the data gained through the questionnaires. The
data obtainedthroughopen-ended questions, interview and document analysis were analyzed by
condensing the information into key thems and topics. The responses to close ended questions were
analyzed using SPSS software version 26. Quantitative data were analyzed using percentage and mean.
Responses from interview and secondary data were summarized and finally generalization was made on
the results of the study. The study revealed that school of commerce has no written training and
development policy. The organization conducts an assessment; most importantly the organization
evaluates and monitors the employee’s performance. The organization has realistic training and
development objectives and roles. The organization training and development plan is well communicated
to all employees. Training and development programs are evaluated and designed compatible with the
actual job to be performed and able to improve skills, knowledge and attitude of employees which can
increase performance on the job. The program is an expensive process and also the trainee can quit the
job after a lot of investment is incurred, employed of less money,and repetitive trainingsthis are the main
challenge in the organization. Trainees are satisfied because of the training and it helped them to perform
the work easily. On the other side, the organization needs to focus on these aspects that all staffs or
employees need to be part of the training and development program. Finally to make the training and
development effective the organization needs to revise the policy and procedure.
