Abstract
The present study attempted to explore teachers and instructors' job satisfaction and its
relation with self-esteem, taking some selected demographic variables. The study was
done (through two Likert-tlJpe scales i. e. Job satisfaction survey and self-esteem scales) on
a total of 284 (208 males and 76 females) teachers and instructors in Dessie town, who
were selected via proportional stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using
mean, standard deviation, pearson-product moment correlation, multiple regression and
One-way ANOV A. Results showed that such demographic variables as age, number of
dependants and work experience were positively and significantly related to job
satisfaction, while marital status was related negatively and significantly with job
satisfaction. But sex and educational level of the participants did not show a significa nt
correlation. All the independent variables (sex, age, marital status, number of
dependents, educational level, work experience and self-esteem) taken together
significantly predicted job satisfaction. Age was found to be the best predictor among the
variables entered in the equation. It was also noted that, there was no statistically
significance difference on job satisfa ction among teachers and instructors. On the basis of
these results, discussion and conclusion were made. Finally, some recommendations are
forwarded for possible intervention and future research.
