Abstract
Private teacher education is a very recent phenomenon in Ethiopi a. However, it is a vastly
expanding segment of post secondary education; parti cul arly in Oromia Regional State.
Presently private teacher education institutions are solely shouldered with the
responsibility of preparing firs t-cycle primary school teachers for the region.
This study has attempted to explore readiness of the institutions to effectively carry out
their responsibi lity based on four basic questions. The study was conducted using
descriptive survey method. The necessary data were gathered with the help of
questionnaire, interview and documents mainly. Data analysis was done using
percentage, mean and chi-square to test the degree of differences among respondents.
The findings of the study indicated that the institutions lack organizational facility,
skilled teacher educators and managers to effectively discharge their responsibility.
Absence of direct participation in student teachers recruitment and promoting planned
development of the institutions by Oromia Regional Education Bureau were also
observed. Generally profess ional supports, regulatory and monitoring activities on the
side of education bureau are seen in adequate. Quality of teachers from these institutions
is becoming questionable. This is a great danger to the future provision of quality pri mary
education in school s.
Therefore, combined effort of the education bureau and owners of the institution is
req uired to shape and sustain provision of quality teacher education in private teacher
education institutions. Based on the find ings and conclusions of the study this paper
recommends major actions to be taken by the institution owners and the education bureau
in their endeavor to secure production of qualified first cycle primary school teachers in
the region.
Accordingly, the owners should invest to improve fac ilities and services, estab lish strong
relationship wi th their major stakeholders and make up managers' ability of organizing
educational programs of their institutions. The regional education bureau also should take
leading responsibility in monitoring and regulating the quality of teacher education
provided in the private teacher education institutions.
