Manufacturers’ Compliance of Pre-Packed Juice to Labelling Requirements, and Customers’ Use of Labelling Information for Decision to Purchase Pre-Packed Foods among Consumers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Abstract

Background: In Ethiopia, there was limited information on food labels compliance with food labelling requirements and customers’ use of labelling information for purchasing decision making. So, this study was designed with the aim of filling this information gap. Methods: A cross- sectional study was conducted in Addis Ababa in, 2019. Thirty one juice products and 403 consumers from 15 supermarkets were included in the study. Compliance was assessed using the 17 standard requirements for food labelling information. Food labelling information use was measured by considering use of 10 food labelling information and practicing it frequently was considered good practice. Data was collected using semistructured questionnaires and checklist. Data was entered in to Epi data entry and analyzed using SPSS. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression were performed. Results: Two hundred and four (50.6%) were males and 248 (61.5%) attended college. Among respondents 105 (26.1%) were uses the food labelling information in good way. Sex, marital status, monthly income and level of awareness were associated (p<0.05) with use of food labelling information. Only 6 (19.4%) fulfilled all standard requirements, while 1 (3.2%) fulfilled only 50% of the requirements. Conclusion: Only about one fifth of juice products fulfill all required food labelling information and only about one fourth of customers use food labelling information. Sex, marital status, monthly income and level of awareness were associated with use of food labelling information. Attention should be given in creating awareness and regulating food product labelling requirements.
