An Exploration on Students’ English Vocabulary-Learning Strategies at Koye Feche Primary School: Grade Eight Students in Focus

Abstract

This study aimed to explore Students’ English Vocabulary-Learning Strategies at Koye Fache Primary School: Grade Eight Students in Focus. Three basic questions were raised to achieve the objectives of the study. A descriptive survey research method was employed to answer these basic research questions. Grade eight students were the target population of this study. Top ten students and four English teachers were the sample size of the study. 80 students and 4 English teachers were selected by using purposive sampling method for this study. The main findings of this study were: problem of students to analyze parts of speech while they are guessing the meanings of new words and they clearly knew nouns effectively but they did not know which words were adverbs, verbs and adjectives properly, lack of awareness to implement VLS during vocabulary learning in English classes or they could not have awareness tend to choose or select the right strategies (such as contextual guessing, dictionary strategies, by using synonyms and antonyms, by using word classes such as nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs) while they are studying English vocabulary in English language, inappropriate use of social strategies to ask classmates or teachers in order to guess the meaning of new words in the target language. A large number of students did not try to apply tending to repeat words in speaking or writing and write new words by taking down notes on a piece of paper to review them afterwards in cognitive strategies respectively. The students could not have a schedule to study English vocabularies in meta cognitive, less interested of students in vocabulary learning strategies and bilingual dictionaries were commonly used to guess the meaning of new words in L2 vocabulary learning strategies. Based on the research findings, the researcher tried to put a solution for this study by: giving special attention on VLS and advising students effectively how they use varieties of strategies such as: antonyms, synonyms, using dictionary, analyzing its parts of speech, etc while they are guessing the meanings of new words, motivating or encouraging the students in social strategies by giving rewards such as pen, a piece of paper, exercise book and by adding bonus marks on their results while they are asking their teachers and classmates in the target language and helping the students how they use monolingual dictionary while they implemented determination strategies or VL strategies. Based on the conclusions of this study, the researcher forwarded the recommendations for this study in general.
