| dc.description.abstract | Researches based on past experience indicate that a considerable number of structural failures are mainly associated with human error in the design stage of structural engineering projects, and many of these problems could have been at least minimized if there had been adequate design checking. Contacts have been made with the chief engineers in Addis Ababa City Administration, Ministry of Urban Development and Construction, and design offices of selected sub cities. From them copies of structural calculation documents are collected. Results are reported herein from those data investigating and evaluating two major issues in the typical design-checking processes- (i) scientific/engineering content and (ii) consistency of the checking procedure. Following a review of current work in this area, appropriate checklist, which examines the effects different parameters, is prepared for a typical design checking process. Discussion on computerized environment in relation to structural engineering is carried out addressing points related to software limitations, verification and validation. Although a beginning work in this area, I believe the results will serve as a base for practicing professionals as well as for further study. | |
