Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the application of active learning and continuous assessment in Pentecostal Theological College. To this end, a descriptive survey design method was employed. Both primary and secondary sources of data were used. The primary source included deans, instructors and students of Pentecostal Theological College where as the secondary sources were different literature and policy document, and grade reports of Pentecostal Theological College. A total of 64 respondents participated in this case study. Data collection tools were questionnaires, semi-structured interview guide, focus group discussion, and observation checklist.
Based on the data analysis the following major findings were obtained. That study revealed that the majority (83%) instructors of the college had good understanding of active learning and continuous assessment; it was found out that despite of good understanding of the concept of AL and CA, half (50%) of the instructors did not frequently utilize it; instructors provide 2 – 3 tests and one project work for a given course in as semester; instructors equated the provision of a series of test with continuous assessment; large class size, instructors’ tight schedule; lack of commitment;
and broad course content and teaching load were the major challenges that encountered the instructors in the implementation of active learning and continue assessment. Based on these findings it was safely concluded that active learning and continuous assessment in Pentecostal Theological College were moderately implemented.
Finally, it was recommended that refresher training as part of professional development of the academic staff of the college should be provided for the instructors in the area of active learning and continuous assessment; the top management of the Pentecostal Theological College should regularly evaluate and monitor the implementation of active learning and continuous assessment; The College should consider having small class size so that all instructor would be able to implement AL and CA; and Maximizing student’s involvement It is known quality education and success in education comes from the active involvement of student. Therefore, students must be encouraged to engage cognitively, emotionally, and physically with the content
