Abstract
The purpose of this study is to describe and explain the main problems of female youth
employment in public education sector. Moreover, it will attempt to explain as why female
youth are unevenly distributed in various occupations of the sector and the potential areas of
female youth employment in public education sector. Youth women in Gindeberet, Jeldu and
Abuna Gindeberet districts have been suffer from a deficit of decent work opportunities.
Employment opportunities for women particularly young women are very scarce, challenging
and complex. In education sector there are more female youth secretaries and elementary
schoolteachers than female manager and female secondary schoolteachers, their employment
was affected by various factors and even employed young females face many problems at work
place. The study tried to assess challenges and prospects of female youth employment in public
education sector of the three districts. The researcher adopted both qualitative and
quantitative research approaches; both probability and non probability sampling technique;
both primary and secondary source of data for the study. The distribution of female youth in
different occupations of public education sector was uneven in the three districts under study.
Most of the sector's female workers are concentrated in primary school with certificate and
diploma qualifications, while few of them are school director, secondary school teachers and
none of them is in managerial position in the sector. Examination of women's participation in
decision-making revealed an even worse situation. The constitution's affirmation in guarantee
of access to and full participation in power structure and decision making have not even been
taken up by policy commitment. Finding indicates that constitutional commitment of the
government to grant affirmative action has not been transited into concrete action at any level.
Low educational achievement of women, bias in recruitment and deep rooted perceptions
regarding the work of females are common for imbalance across different positions of the
sector. Young women come across with many challenges on the way of finding jobs and at
work place. At recruitment stage bias in hiring and low altitudes towards female 's work is
usual problems. Harassment and stereotype believes are major difficulties that young women
face in work place. Employment opportunities for young women are shaped by different
factors, factors influencing the supply and demand sides of the labor market and individual
characteristics like educational achievement and personal networks. Government, the society
and women themselves should work together to mitigate the constraints so as to enhance
employability of young women.
