Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the practices and challenges of Early Childhood Care
and Education in Addis Ababa, specifically three selected government kindergarten schools in
Yeka Sub-City. Based on the purpose of the study, the access and the sufficiency and efficiency
nature of key inputs and management practices, the practice of major stakeholders’ participation
on the ground overall practices implemented and challenges encountered of the programme
underway assessed . To this end, case study method was used for the study using qualitative
approach. Data were gathered from 3 kindergartens through various means from 3principals, 5
teachers 6 parents/guardians and 1supervisor. Data instruments were interview, Focus Group
Discussion and observation. The data gathered through interview and focus group discussion
were transcribed, analyzed, using qualitative data where necessary and appropriate. In addition,
different documents were consulted and summarized and described deeply. The findings of the
study showed that the sample kindergartens are not that much conducive for all children such as
narrow classes, high student per teacher ratio, low Participation of parents, and stakeholders,
Lack of trained principals, experts and parents/guardians are great barriers to implement Early
childhood Care and Education. , limited support system of supervision and collaboration of
stakeholders are the other barriers of the kindergartens. Finally some helpful suggestions have
been recommended based on the findings and discussions.
