| dc.description.abstract | Medicinal plants and natural products have been demonstrated to extreme diversified health benefits for thousands of years by traditional uses. Cyperus esculentus L. (Tigernut) is a grass like plant with brown tuberous rhizomes below the ground. It is in the family of cyperacea and indigenous to Ethiopia. Cyperus esculentus has medicinal value and is important in the traditional medicine like other species in the genus. Traditional medicines have been administrated to an affected organ through various methods. Medicinal smoke is one of them. In this project work major components of the smoke sample of Cyperus esculentus L. (Tigernut) were investigated. The rhizome part was collected from a plant of Cyperus esculentus L. (Tigernut) in Yabelo (Borana) district Oromia region in 2017. The plant material was burnt on electrical install stove. The smoke was captured on an inverted funnel and allowed to pass through extended vacuum rubber tubing in-to two suction flasks connected in series and extracted with organic solvents (Methanol and n- hexane). Isolation and purification of 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde and Cyprotundone from methanol extract was done using a combination of Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), Column Chromatography (CC), Preparative Tin layer chromatography (PTLC). Compounds present in the smoke were identified and characterized by different spectroscopic technique (NMR, GC-MS, UV-light and IR). However further studies are still necessary on this and other medicinal plants which provide therapeutic smoke. | en_US |
