Lack of parking spaces in global context is a complex problem that affects the urban transportation in cities. High population and rapid urbanization coupled with augmentation in the quantity of vehicles have advanced the pressures in parking spaces, which has resulted in a massive urban transportation problem and inefficiencies. The primary objective of this paper is to assess the reason behind the inadequate parking facilities especially off-street parking areas that leads to different types of urban transportation problems. This paper examines the reasons and effects of parking space shortages on the urban transportation in Bole Sub City, Addis Ababa. To measure the main factors the study employed primary and secondary methods of data collection and field observations. The collected data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively, to support the findings, the study incorporated qualitative interviews with stakeholders, Key findings of the research revealed that shortage of parking spaces are some of the factors that cause traffic congestion, decrease in road capacity, and increase in the travel time, and deterioration in the safety of the pedestrians. There is also illegal and double parking behaviors that increase the number of traffic flow delays and reduce the effectiveness of the public transport. The paper concludes by stating that to overcome the problem of parking shortages, integrated urban planning, policy reform, and investment in structured parking facilities are necessary. This effort shall play a key role in enhancing the traffic condition to enhance urban mobility, and sustainable transportation development in the fast expanding cities such as Addis Ababa. The results can be used by urban planners and policymakers to reduce the problem of parking-related transportation issues.
