Item Design and Development of Web Based Maternal and Child Nutrition Information System(Addis Ababa University, 2017-06) Habtamu, Tigist; Bekele, Rahel (PhD); Yirgu, Robel (PhD)Under nutrition is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality of children in most developing countries including Ethiopia. Maternal and child nutrition related issues are main concerns of mothers, family or care takers, health care providers, organizations and governments that work in the field of nutrition. Since nutritional information has significant role in the reduction of maternal and child malnutrition, it is important to avail relevant nutritional data on various media including the web to enhance the effort that the health sector is putting to reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality. Therefore, this study is intended to design and develop web based maternal and child nutrition information system that give hands for the health sector effort towards the reduction of maternal and child morbidity and mortality. Interview and document analysis were used as main tools to capture the system requirement, and the data was analyzed using inductive approach .The project used selected artifacts of an object oriented system analysis and design technique to design the web based system. The finding of the study shows that there is low level of awareness in the community about maternal and child nutrition. The prime source of Information on nutrition during pregnancy and lactation were not health professionals at the maternal and child health department, instead, they get it from other pregnant women, family or friends. Therefore, availing information is one way of intervention which strengthen the availability of information in a feasible and cost-effective mannerItem Designing Information Support System for Maternal and Child Health Care: Using Participatory Approach(Addis Ababa University, 2017-06) Bogale, Addisalem; Bekele, Rahel (PhD); Yirgu, Robel (PhD)Background: In Ethiopia maternal and child mortality rate is higher due to mother's lower access to maternal and child health care services which intern is due to their lack of information. So many mhealth initiatives have been conducted in order to address the problem of maternal and child health care. However, most of the projects are short lived, and the failure may be because of absence of participation of professionals and concerned stakeholders. Objective: The objective of this project was to design mobile application information support system for maternal and child health care services. Method: The study followed qualitative research in participatory approach to engage mothers and MNCH workers in the process of the project. Primary data was collected through in depth interview and focused group discussion during the process of the project. Secondary documents were analyzed to obtain user requirements. Purposive sampling was used to select health centers, mothers and MNCH coordinators. The project use selected artifacts of an object oriented system analysis and design technique to design the low fidelity prototype. Result: The study showed that pregnant mothers at the study area have been accessing maternal and child health care information from national media, health related brochures, education and advice of health workers. Conclusion: The information support system was designed in Amharic (local language) so that it is easy for mothers to read and understand the maternal and child care information that addresses maternal and child health issues. Key words: participatory approach, information support system, maternal and child health care
