Item Challenges of Students Who Come From Single Parents on Their Educational Attainment At Yekaite 66 Secondary School(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06) Getachew, Yetemwork; Tsega, Sewalem (PhD)The purpose of this study is to investigate the challenges of students who come from single parents in attaining secondary school education at Yekatite 66 secondary school in Arada sub city of Addis Ababa. In order to obtain relevant information in depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with single parented students and their teachers with the combination of Focus Group Discussion (FGD) as well as document review. For this purpose, the data were collected from ten students from single parents and five teachers have participated in the study to obtain the necessary data.The data collected were analyzed using thematic analysis or major idea analysis. The findings from the study revealed that challenges that single parented students face in attaining secondary education are multidimensional and complex. They are complex because one causes the other or no single challenge that stand on its own. Those challenges are economic hard ship, poor parental care, low parental involvement and emotional challenges (loneliness, hesitation for their parents love and helpless). In consequence, those challenges have negative effects on single parented students’ class attendance, concentration, academic performance, behavior and forced them to drop out of the school. The study also suggests that the school encourage educating youths to be economically self supportive and good family members. The school guidance and counseling officers should work co-operately to the school administration in order to identify and to support students from single parent homes to overcome their emotional problems. This will help them to concentrate and work hard at school as the same time it will improve their academic as well as their future life.Item The Educational challenges and Opportunities of Deaf students at Ras Gobena primary school of Gambella Town(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06) Chuol, Yiey; Tsega, Sewalem (PhD)The major objective to conduct this study in Ras Gobena Primary school of Gamabella towm was to explore the educational opportunities and its challenges on Deaf students. From Ras Gobena primary 19 participants those includes 12 Deaf students,5 special needs educators and 2 school principals to representes the sample size in the study were selected. He used purposive sampling technique for Deaf students, school principals and for special needs educators. The data collection tools used by researcher were face to face interview for school principals and special needs educators as well as focus group discussion for Deaf students. Researcher first identified the exact number, gender, age and grade level of Deaf students enrolled,the data collected from different sources were analysed qualitatively.From finding section Deaf students and special need educators reported the following results: We are highly proud because of being first model Deaf student in the region where from the very beginning there was no this important opportunity provided to marginalized people that stood for all human equality, like Education For All and realization of the Deafness as a part of human’s character that may not limit the contribution and participation of any individual person in all aspects of life. On another hand absent of Ethiopian’ sign language qualified educators in school center,lack of cooperative learning share of Deaf students with their peers in the school center and lack of teaching devices, inappropriate classroom seating’s and lack of incentive supports were the most problems hindered the educational challenges of Deaf students at school center.The above expressed point of view implied the attempt that showed the beginning of inclusive education for Deaf students at Ras Gobena primary school and inappropriate learning they faced due to absent of sign language qualified educators hinders challenges those Deaf students have at school center.Item Educational Opportunities and Challenges of Female Students with Hearing Impairment at Mizan ‘Kutir 1’ Primary School(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06) G/Michael, Wubitu; Tsega, Sewalem (PhD)The purpose of this study was to investigate the educational opportunity and challenges faced by female students’ with hearing impairment in an inclusive classroom in’ Mizan kutir And ‘ primary school. A qualitative research approach with a case study design was used as research method. Purposive sampling procedures were also used. Interview, focus group discussion and observation were used to gather data. The participants of the study consisted of female students with hearing impairment, special needs educators, regular teachers, classmates, parents and principals at ‘Mizan kutir And’ primary school. The population of the study consisted: Nine female students with hearing impairment, five regular teachers, five parents, four student without hearing impairment (classmates), two special needs educators and two principals. The data obtained were analyzed through content analysis method. The research finding showed that inclusion of hearing impairment students in to the regular classes, availability of assignment special needs education educator at this school level; classmate supports in sharing notes, and existence of resource room were the main educational opportunities, enrollment of female students with hearing impairment is greater than male students with hearing impairment, awareness creation on inclusive education, writing of message on exercise book or on blackboard to communicate with them ,financial support for two female students with hearing impairment. On the other hand, the main educational challenges were:- two of participants of teachers and five of female students with hearing impairments were not agree with the inclusion of female students with hearing impairment and all students with hearing impairments to regular classroom, no repeated training on sign language, not using sign language in teaching subjects and absence of interpreter of subject teachers’ lessons, these are educational challenges of female students with hearing impairment in the classroom as a result of their impairment. The challenges of female students with hearing impairment due to their gender were related with social pressure such as work load, teasing, feeling of inferiority and incompetence. In addition to the above findings, necessary recommendation from the participants and the researcher wereincluded in the research in order to reduce the impact of the female student with hearing impairment and to meet the needs of the female students with hearing impairment.Item The Experience of Blind Mothers in Raising their Children: The Case of five Blind Mothers in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2017-01) Berhe, Ethiopia; Tsega, Sewalem (PhD)The main objective of this study was to assess the experiences of blind mothers in raising their children. For exploring the experience of blind mothers raising their children, a case study qualitative design was used. The main method for data gathering was interview supplemented by focus-group discussion with purposefully selected mothers. The findings of the study showed, blind mothers has limited communication process in accurately observing and interpreting behavior of children and sensitively responding to their needs. Thus continuous discussions of blind mothers with their children, using the help of their elder children, father, and grandparents were the way they use to interact with their children. Additionally, advising, encouraging and provide their children with spiritual and moral lessons to build their children self-esteem were found to be more commonly utilized coping mechanisms of parenting way of interaction. Their lack of early intervention like trainings for blind mothers on how to raise their children successfully, daycare for their children and economic empowerment of blind mothers to improve their life situation had challenged them to have good condition in raising their children. The mentioned findings were discussed and recommendations were made to improve the interaction and communication of blind mothers and their children through provision of early intervention.
