The data analyzed . came from a random sample of one hundred and fifty students enr-olled in the Faculty of Science (AAU) as freshmen in 1987/88. Regression methods were used to analy-ze the data. The influence of 15 variables on J:'reshman University performance of Science students was examined. A t.'ransform of the first-semester Freshman GPA appeared to have a str-ong linear· relationship with identical transform of ESLCE GPA. This finding contradicts the findings of other r-esearchers in this area to-date. ·The performance of students from Addis Ababa and those from Other Regions appeared· to show a difference. It also seemed that dormitory facilities had a positive effect on student performance. On account of the strong resationship between the transformed variables of ESLCE GPA and first semester GPA, the effect of t he remaining 13 ._ .'. other explanatory variables appeared to be very small
