    The Effects of Mother Tongue and other Schoolrelated Factors on English Language Learning: the Case of Grade Nine Students Whose Mother Tongue is Af an Oromo in Arsi Zone

    The purpose of this study was designed to examine the impacts of mother tongue (Afan Oromo) and other school related factors on students learning ability in Engli sh language and to forward the finding with possible recommendations to concerned stakeholders so that they would take measures in improving at various levels. A descriptive survey method was employed. The sample consisted of 200 students, ten English teachers and three school principals draw from three sample high schools in Arsi Zone. Regarding the respondents, students from each sample school were selected using stratified random sampling. But the principals, Engli sh teachers were se lected using available sampling. To gather the necessary data questionnaire (open and closed ended), interviews and observation were the main instruments employed. The information gathered through questionnaire and observation was analyzed in percentage whilst the information collected through interviews and open-ended questions were analyzed qualitatively. The major findings of the study include the vowel length and consonant geminations of certain sounds in the written form of Afan Oromo confuse to a certain extent the English learner. The level of teachers ' qualification and teaching experience were adequate to teach English at grade level except two teachers "vho "Ycrc diploma holders. School instructional resources were inadequate. The overcrowded nature of the classroom was also another findin g. Students' readiness for learning Engl ish which is through students' motivation was appropriate. For various reasons, the ability of the students in English currently low. Based on the findings recommendations are made to existing problems. Accordingly, Qube had better revised to minimize sound confusion to learn English and lengthing of vowels and gemination of consonants, devising mechanism to improve the quality of English teachers, encouraging private investors to open private high schools, employing different methods of teaching English, encouraging students to improve English language and others were recommended to solve the identified problems.

    Factors Influencing School-Community Relations the Case of Government Secondary Schools of Yeka Sub City, Addis Ababa City

    This study investigates the key factors influencing the establishment and maintenance of school-community relations in government secondary school in Yeka Sub City of Addis Ababa. The study employed a descriptive research design, gathering data from a total of 394 respondents, including teacher, principals, vice principals, supervisors and parents, selected through random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. Questionnaire and interview were used for data collection, with 394 questionnaires successfully collected and analyzed using frequency, percentage and mean. The study revealed inadequate performance in several critical areas, perceptions of school safety and discipline. Furthermore, the availability of resources for school-community programs and the community understanding of school goals / vision were found to be inadequately performed. Teacher morale and job satisfaction overall student achievement and resources availability for academic programs are very low. Similarly, workshops or training for parents and addressing community concerns promptly and transparently were rated low. School proactive engagement with community leaders, community perception of school leadership, the school’s encouragement of feedback from parents and the community, community understanding of school rules/ policies and the school responsiveness to community feedback and concern were inadequately performed. The study also highlighted the low appointment of a dedicated community liaison officer and insufficient review and updating of school policies based on community feedback. Finally, overall student enrolment and retention, availability of community based learning resources and effective management of school resources were inadequately carried out. Overall launching public awareness campaign on the importance of community involvement in education, integrating community feedback mechanism in to educational planning and providing training for school leaders and teachers on community engagement were notably low. Further research, such as comparative studies, need to be carried out to determine the overall factors influencing good school-community relation

    The Effect of Balanced Scorecard on Employee Satisfaction the case of Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Service Enterprise

    This research thesis explores the impact of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) on employee satisfaction, focusing on how this performance management tool can influence organizational effectiveness through improved employee engagement, motivation, and retention. In today’s competitive business environment, organizations recognize that the success of their operations depends heavily on employee satisfaction, which directly affects productivity, innovation, customer loyalty, and turnover rates. The study investigates the relationship between the implementation of the BSC, which aligns organizational goals with individual and team performance, and employee satisfaction. The primary aim of this research is to assess how the BSC framework influences employee satisfaction across various organizational perspectives: financial, customer, internal processes, and learning and growth. By examining existing practices, challenges, and strategies for effective implementation of the BSC, the research seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis of its impact on employee satisfaction and to offer recommendations for enhancing the BSC’s effectiveness as a performance management tool. The research is conducted at the Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Service Enterprise, focusing on the company’s head office and employees involved in BSC implementation. The study relies on quantitative data, collected through surveys with directors, team leaders, and employees. The result of hypothesis testing support the beneficial effects of these elements on employee satisfaction and provides insightful information for organizational strategies aimed at improving overall employee satisfaction inside the company. This study is significant as it aims to provide valuable insights for organizations looking to improve employee satisfaction through strategic performance management systems. The study also seeks to fill a gap in existing literature, particularly regarding the impact of BSC on employee satisfaction. The research will provide actionable recommendations for improving the relationship between performance management and employee satisfaction, ultimately contributing to a more positive organizational culture and enhanced business performance.
