Item Child Rearing Practices by Parents of Children With Physical Disabilities In Woreda 20 And 25 Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2001-06) Tadesse, Selamawit; Wole, DargeThe study investigated child-rearing practices by parents of children with physical liabilities. The rearing practices considered in the study include feeding, health care, disciplinary methods, informal sex-role skill training, formal schooling and parent-child relationship. In collecting data for the study, thirty mothers/guardians, thirty children with physical disability and their twenty-tree non-disabled siblings were contacted. The children with physical disability were selected from among those who get some support from two Addis Ababa non-government organizations namely Cheshire Community Based Rehabilitation Project and Voluntary Council for Handicap Project. In addition to the above mentioned, data were collected from the two projects' offices records. The data obtained in the study were analysed using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Accordingly the major findings were: a reasonably long period of breast- feeding, inadequate body washing, an emphasis on non-corporal pum"shment, de- emphasis on informal skill training and formal schooling and general positive relationship between mothers/guardians and their children with physical disabilities. Also, substantial influence of traditional and religious outlook on childrearing practices was observed particularly in relation to health care, informal sex role skill training and schooling. Discrepancies in rearing of children with and without physical were observed particularly in disciplinary methods, informal sex role skills training and formal schooling while similarities were on feeding, health care and parent-child r lationships. Awareness creation and education to the families on physical disability and its intervention is recommended for more positive rearing practices among families of children with physical disabilitiesItem Lived Experience of Unmarried Women above the Age of Thirty Living in Addis Ababa City(Addis Ababa University, 2018-07) Tadesse, Selamawit; Zenebe, Mulumebet (PhD)This thesis explores the deinstitutionalization of marriage and the experience of women who remain single past the expectant marital age. Being in a matrimonial relationship is deemed an important development and social task. The lack of such relationship often leads to social stigmatization and marginalization. The goal of this research is to investigate the lived experience of women of who remain single past the age of thirty, and to gain an understanding of how gender-based stereotypes influence their lives by examining their personal experiences. In an effort to better understand the stigmatization of today’s single woman, a qualitative method using in-depth interview and focus group discussion was adopted for this study. Twenty-four single women who live in Addis Ababa city were selected using snow ball sampling technique. Women from different social, economic, educational, ethnic & religious background take part in the research. Sixteen women were interviewed individually regarding their experience of being single and eight women participated in focus groups discussed and shared personal stories of how they negotiate their status as a single woman in their everyday interactions with family, friends, co-workers, and other general acquaintances. Pertaining to the major findings of the study the reasons to remain single differ among women. The finding shows that the major reason for women to remain single is “not finding the right person for marriage”. The right person is the one who encompass the ideal characteristics and personality of the perfect person with whom they could consider having a relationship so not finding this person make women to remain unmarried. The research also found out women used different kinds of mechanism to cope the pressure and the stigma they face.Item Occurrence of Aflatoxin Contamination in Milk and Dairy Products from Bishoftu and Its Surrounding(Addis Ababa University, 2017-11) Tadesse, Selamawit; Zewdu, Ashagrie (PhD)Aflatoxin contamination of milk in the Greater Addis Ababa milk shed Ethiopia was reported in 2016, indicating a that high probability of contamination of milk corning from the surrounding areas of Addis Ababa. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in milk and dairy products (cheese butter and yogurt) in Bishoftu (Ethiopia). The effect of different dairy production processes to the concentration of AFM1 was also investigated. In addition, KAP (Knowledge attitude and practice) study was conducted on local producer and on employees from dairy industries. Milk (n=108), cheese (82), yogurt (93) and butter (82) samples were taken from both industrial and local producers by purchasing from their shops and the level of AFM1 was determined using ELISA (Enzyme Linked Irnmuno Sorbate Assay) method. From 366 samples analysed 361 samples were found positive and the maximum value of aflatoxin among all the analyzed samples was found in cheese which is 5.580+0.08I-'g/kg and the minimum (Not detected) in butter. Under comparing the mean values of each dairy product type of local products with the industrial products all the industrial products have a higher mean value r~lative to the local one. In addition to this the KAP study shows though the local producers had knowledge on mycotoxin related questions their knowledge specific to AFM1 practice towards reducing the contamination level of AFM1 is not enough. But they have a positive attitude towards reduction of AFM1 level. Unlike the local producers employees in dairy industry had a better practice towards reducing the level of AFM1 contamination. Even though researches have been done about level of AFM1 in milk so far, this shldy shows that the problem on the occurrence of the toxin s till persists. Therefore, the government should establish a program to regularly cheek AFM1 levels and take corrective mitigation measures. Key words: Aflatoxin Ml, Milk, Cheese, Yogurt, ELISA, KAP assessment
