    Challenges of Women‟s Political Participation and Representation: In the Case of Raya Kobo Woreda, Amhara National Regional State

    In recent year women’s political participation and representation in local politics has gain significance attention around the world. The central objective of this study is to examine the challenges of women’s political participation and representation in Raya Kobo Woreda. Women’s in study area were not politically empowered. To conduct this study, descriptive survey method was used. Data were collected from primary and secondary sources. Finally, the research came up with the following major findings. The proportion of women at Woreda council was 25 %, while, at Kebele council, women constitutes 20.2%. The share of women at Woreda and Kebele executive has 18.5 % and 14.3% respectively. There are different challenges that have narrowed women’s political participation and representation at local level of study area. These are weak women institutional structure (WCYAs, women association, women league)that advocate women’s political issue, low level of commitment and coordination between concerned body (such as APP, Council office, agriculture and education sectors )that translated women right in to practice. Economic, social and cultural influences were also contributed low political participation and representation in study area. Women political participation and representation was not full of challenges but there are some opportunities, the formation of women institution, international and regional agreements and national women policy were considered as an opportunity. It could be concluding that women’s political participation and representation was constrained by different challenges at local council. Therefore, performing awareness creation and implementing international conventions and women policy to empower on political participation and representation
