Item Analyzing Ethical Practices of Public Relations Practitioners in FDRE Ministerial Offices(AAU, 2020-08) Amare, Melkamu; Shiferaw, Yohannes (Phd)Ethics in public relations plays a great role in human communication. It brings the credibility to the given organization. It helps to establish faithful relationships between organization and its publics. So as to achieve goals and/or interests of the organization and publics, the PRs practitioners should ensure the reliable services by fulfilling ethical standards and code of ethics. The study intends to analyze ethical practices of public relations practitioners at FDRE government ministries through such measurements of PR professionalism including professional ethics, availability of standards and code of ethics, autonomy, serving the public interest and so on. The study assessed three FDRE ministries PR directorates and PR practitioners by using a cross sectional survey and involved the existing 20 ministries in the country. It used a descriptive design based on purposive sampling technique to select source of data.The study used mixed approach and both qualitative and quantitative data collection tools such as questionnaire, FGD and interview were used. Employees, PR practitioners and PR directors were subjects of the study. The findings of the study shows that PR profession receives less attention in the organizations; there is a political influence which makes the PR office the government mouthpiece; the PR staff didn‟t get professional training and participation in PR association. Moreover, there were lack of center of excellence to PR growth, lack of practitioners’ skill and unavailability of common standards and code of ethics. As a result, it needs availing of favorable conditions from the government, PR practitioners and other concerned bodies. The researcher recommends that all the PRs practitioners should acknowledge that there is an obligation to protect and enhance the profession; keep informed and educated about practices in the profession that ensures ethical conduct and counsel its members in proper decision making by observing the ethical recommendations.Item An Assessment of Crises Communication Practices and Challenges: the Case of the Federal Police Commission(2020-06) Abde Gebramedhin, Jaylan; Shiferaw, Yohannes (Phd)Crisis communication is tool that enables an organization to respond appropriately in order to maintain public confidence and minimize the damage. The main purpose of this particular study is to assess the crisis communication practice and challenge in the case of FPC by taking selected cases into consideration. This research fills a knowledge gap that exists in practical application of crisis communication strategy in FPC to tackle crisis. It also provides the FPC with further information on the importance of designing and applying crisis communication strategy and to resolve existing challenges. The study has employed descriptive design and qualitative approach to conduct the study. Accordingly, in depth interview and FGD were applied as instruments of data collection. Respondents were selected purposively based on their relevant knowledge in relation to the subject matter. The researcher has conducted In-depth interviews with five senior officials of the FPC, five senior officials of Addis Ababa and Oromia Police Commissions, seven journalists from press, electronic media and Ethiopian Broadcast Authority, two Media and Public Relations Officers from Ministry of Defense (MoD), one officer from the Public Relations Department of National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) and one officer from the Public Relations Department of Information Network Security Agency (INSA). Totally the researcher has conducted with twenty one in-depth interviews and one FGD with ten participants who are residents of Kirkos Sub City of Addis Ababa City Administration as well as experts with different educational backgrounds. The major findings of study show that the FPC has no crisis communication strategy to apply during critical situations mentioned in the study. As a result tells that the FPC was not able to act in accordance with the three stages of crisis namely pre–crisis, crisis and post crisis strategy that should have been applied to tackle the crises; thus the FPC did not evaluate the history of those crises to find out its strength and weakness. In addition to these the result has indicated that the FPC hadn’t properly engage and consult its active stakeholders and furthermore, public opinion was not properly managed by establishing media monitoring and public opinion framework. Based on the findings, therefore, the researcher forwarded some recommendations.Item Perception on Effects of Kana Tv Movies on Students’ Acadmic Performance: The Case of Students, Teachers and Parents at Hbir Primary School(AAU, 2018-06) Derib, Zemed; Shiferaw, Yohannes (Phd)The main aim of this study was examining the perceived effects of watching Kana TV on students’ academic performance at Hibir primary school. To get the appropriate data, both qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed in the study. Research tools such as interview, focus group discussion and content analysis of grade 5 and 6 students’ rosters as a while exposure of Kana TV and their previous Average results of the mentioned grade students while they were grade 3 and 4 rosters were used . 46 questionnaires had been distributed to all Hibir primary school teachers and 38 of them were valid and complete. Collected data from the questionnaires were analyzed in terms of frequency and percentage. Grade 5 and 6 students’ rosters had been done qualitatively in order to see the difference on students’ academic performance between pre and while exposure of Kana TV movies .The researcher had provided and compared grade 5 students’ average marks when they were grade three with their and grade six students’ average results when they were grade 4 to compare their pre and while results. Due to the nature and type of this research, the researcher chose to take non-probability sampling specifically purposive sampling which involves the selection of cases on the basis of the researcher’s own judgment about which will be the most useful . For the interview data 11 Key informants were selected by using purposive sampling. Ten parents and one psychologist were interviewed. In addition to that Focus group discussion was conducted involving 20 students. Two Focus group discussions were made in two groups each having ten members. The data gathered from in-depth interview and Focus group discussion were analyzed thematically. The findings of the study show that 72% of teachers perceived that viewing Kana TV movies have effects on Students’ academic performance on. The comparison of the academic performance of students also supports the existing perception. Their total average was 78.64% and while their exposure their average result cumulatively decreased to75.49%.The average marks of students Thus, based on the findings some recommendations were forwarded to relevant stakeholders.
