(Addis Ababa University, 2026-01-02) Sebelework Belay; Desalegn Amlaku
This study examines the employees’ perception of fairness in the workplace and its effect on their performance at the Development Bank of Ethiopia. The perception of fairness consists of three main factors: distributive justice, procedural justice, and interactional justice. The researcher used a quantitative approach with a descriptive and explanatory design. Using sample random sampling techniques 284 permanent employees of Development Bank of Ethiopia Head Office and AddiAbaba District were selected. In conducting this study, the required data is obtained throughstructured questionnaires. To check the reliability and validity of the adopted instruments theCronbach’s coefficient alpha test and the content validity test was carried out. The analysisinvolved descriptive statistics and multiple regressions. The results show that all three types of workplace fairness positively influence employee performance. Interactional justice stood out as the most important factor, suggesting that respectful treatment, effective communication, and clear explanations from supervisors significantly boost employee performance. Procedural justice and explanations from supervisors significantly boost employee performance. Procedural justice and distributive justice also had strong positive links to employee performance. The study concludes that improving fairness in treatment, decision-making processes, and reward distribution is crucial for enhancing employee performance at the Development Bank of Ethiopia. It recommends that management should improve transparent procedures, fair reward systems, and communication practices to foster a fair workplace and enhance overall performance.
