Evidence from Manufacturing Private Limited Companies in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
(Addis Ababa University, 2010-11) Mohammed Nuru; Ponnala Venkati
Research studies on the effects of management of working capital policies on firms’ profitability in developing countries, especially in Ethiopia remained an ignored area of empirical research. Thus, this study examined the effect of working capital investment and financing policies on firms’ profitability by using audited financial statements of a sample of 11 manufacturing private limited companies in Tigray region, Ethiopia for the period of 2005 to 2009. The study used return on assets, return on equity and operating profit margin as dependent profitability variables. Accounts receivable period, inventory holding period and accounts payable period are used as independent working capital investment policy variables. Moreover, cash conversion cycle and current assets to total assets ratio are used as comprehensive measures of working capital investment policy. On the other hand, current liabilities to total assets ratio is used as measure of working capital financing policy. The two traditional measures, current ratio and quick ratio, are used as liquidity indicators. In addition, the study used firm size as measured by logarithm of sales, firm growth rate as measured by change in annual sales, financial leverage and annual GDP growth rate as control variables. Both correlation analysis and pooled panel data regression models of cross-sectional and time series data were used for analysis. The results show that longer accounts receivable and inventory holding periods are associated with lower profitability. There is also negative relationship between accounts payable period and profitability measures; however, except for operating profit margin this relationship is not statistically significant. The results also show that there exists significant negative relationship between cash conversion cycle and profitability measures of the sampled firms. No significant relationship between current assets to total assets ratio and profitability measures has been observed. On the other hand, findings show that a highly significant positive relationship between current liabilities to total assets ratio and profitability. Finally, negative relationships between liquidity and profitability measures have also been observed. Managers, therefore, can increase firms’ profitability by improving the efficiency of management of working capital investment and financing policies while, also keeping in view the trade-off between liquidity and profitability

The Practice of 'Repair' During Conversational Discourse in EFL Classes
(Addis Ababa University, 2009-06) ANTENEH GETACHEW; Mohammed Nuru
The main aim of Ihis slUdy is to investigale Ihe practice of repair during conversational discourse in a foreign language classroom. Thus, il is mea11l to assess the nature of repair and repair-initiation patterns practiced during conversalional discourse in EFL classes, see the extent to which students and teachers use repair-initiation strategies during S-S and T-S interactions respectively, examine where the repair-initiations occur with reference to the trouble-source (I'S) in the observed palterns, find out the most fi'equent repair and repairinitialion strategies used during classroom conversational discourse. The main subjects of the study were first year English major students taking the course Communicative English Skills-II and their teacher. Eight lessons recordings were made, fi'om all four sections students, fi'om whichfour lessons were transcribedfor analysis. The analysis of the transcribed data shows that all of the four repair initiation patterns were used during conversational discourse in EFL classes except a variation in frequency of use. In addition, the qua11litative analysis reveals that both slUdents and teachers play repair-initiation roles in S-S and T-S interactions respectively fi'om which other-initiation stralegy is more fi'equently used than self-initiation. Moreover, other initiated self repair pattern is most fi'equently used during conversational discourse in EFL classes. Along with this, concerning the position where repair-initiations occur in the observed patterns, in self initiated patterns the repair-initiations mostly occur in same turn; whereas in other initiated repair patterns the repair-initiations fi'equently occur in next turn immediately after the trouble-source. Finally, the thesis concludes by considering the implications of the .findings forfurther researches as to why other repair-initiation mechanism is highly apparent as well as other initiated self repair pal/ern is most fi'equently occur during conversational discourse in EFL classes. So, the study recommends EFL teachers to conduct CA researches in their classrooms to see the meaning negotiation strategies, in light with the practice of repair, and thereby 10 get feed back for remedial works and enhance students ' communicative competence.

The Effect of Vocabulary Learning Strategy Training on Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary Knowledge and Vocabulary Strategy Use: the Case of Addis Ababa University
(Addis Ababa University, 2024-07) Abebaw Dessalew ; Mohammed Nuru
It is impossible to teach students all the words which are essential for their study. Hence, it is vital to inspect whether vocabulary strategy training helps them to study vocabulary or not. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of vocabulary learning strategy training on university students’ reading comprehension, vocabulary breadth knowledge, vocabulary depth knowledge and vocabulary learning strategies use. Quasi-experimental research design was employed. The study focused on the treatment group looking at their performance before and after intervention. To see the effect of the training in relation to the instruction given in communicative English, a group was included in the study as additional source of information to assess the effectiveness of vocabulary strategy training. The vocabulary learning strategy training was offered to treatment group students for 16 hours. Independent Sample T-test was computed on SPSS to examine if there was a statistically significant difference between the treatment and conventional groups. Paired Sample T-test was also run on the SPSS to see if there was statistically significance difference between the pre and post mean scores of the students in the treatment and conventional group. Moreover, Levene’s test, Kolmogrov-Smirnov test and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test were computed to assess equivalency and normality of the data. The t-test analysis showed the treatment group students scored better in the post test. The students who followed the normal instruction performed less than the treatment group. A comparison of the students who followed the conventional instruction showed in the post-test in vocabulary breadth knowledge test (p-value, .001; moderate effect size, Cohen’s d: .76). In addition, the students assigned to the treatment group scored higher than the conventional group in the post test in vocabulary depth knowledge test (p-value, .00; moderate effect size, Cohen’s d: 0.93). The study found that the experimental group participants improved their vocabulary usage significantly better than the group that followed the conventional instruction in the five among six major categories of vocabulary learning strategies (less than the p-value of 0.05). The treatment group students enhanced their vocabulary knowledge and strategy use because they benefited from the vocabulary strategy training they received for 16 hours. The training helped ii them in developing their knowledge in several vocabulary learning strategies and motivation. Consequently, they effectively studied the use, form and meaning of several words. However, it was found no significant difference in reading comprehension skills between learners assigned to the treatment group and group that followed the conventional instruction (t = 1.14, df = 38 for the conventional group and 36.96 for the experimental group, p > 0.05). This could be attributed to lack of training in reading strategies in the conventional instruction. Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that English language course book writers, instructors should consider the study of varied vocabulary learning strategies.
