Item Analysis of the Interaction between Air Transportation and Economic Growth: Ethiopian Perspective(A.A.U, 2021-06) Mengistu, Samuel; G/Tsadik, Zelalem (PHD)The general purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between air transportation and Ethiopia’s economic performance. This study also aims to show the casual relationship and provides the short-term and long-term relationship between air transport demand and economic growth. In order to achieve these goals Ethiopian Airlines Group and World Bank data source used from 1991 to 2019. To achieve these goals the appropriate estimation methods (VECM, VAR, Granger causality test, and descriptive analysis) were used. Johansen's co-integration analysis shows that there is a co-integration vector between economic growth and air transport expansion, and the corresponding elasticity is positive. VECM results show that the fitting coefficient between economic growth and air traffic dynamics is approximately (𝐸𝐶𝑇 = -0.33). The outcomes of VECM evaluation additionally indicates that long-time period causality runs from air transport demand (passengers and cargo) to financial growth, and considering transport demand, a two-year delay seems reasonable. The empirical evidence obtained from VECM and the causality test (long-term, short-term, and Granger causality) shows that there is a unilateral causal relationship between the development of aviation (passenger and freight) to local economic growth. The results of this document have some political and commercial implications and may be important to Ethiopia’s national air transport will create conditions for better air transport services, which will have a major long-term impact on economic growth. Therefore, policy makers should be aware that this sector is income elastic and has a multiplier effect on economic growth.Item Cost Estimation Practices of Emerging Contractors of Ethiopia: The Case of Addis Ababa Based Local Contractors(Addis Ababa University, 2017-02) Mengistu, Samuel; Bekele, Teshome (PhD)The construction sector in Ethiopia is one of the critical economic institutions in the economic development of the country. However, some firms, in this sector seem to fail quickly. And many have faced difficulty in winning tenders in bidding stage. Consequently this research has the objectives of analyzing tender cost estimation practice, identifying deficiencies requiring remedial actions and recommending solutions that can enhance the performance of local emerging construction firms. The population used was restricted to Addis Ababa based emerging construction firms. The population of 412 firms registered as Grade 5 and above, from the different category of contractors is studied. To address the research objective 135 samples are selected based on snowball sampling method and questionnaire is distributed from which 98 sample respondents replied appropriately to the questionnaire. The literature was reviewed on cost estimation and related aspects. The research tool used was a questionnaire. Data gathered are analyzed using statistical tools. As a result the study revealed that: cost estimation is one of the major causes that aggravate emerging contractors deprived success in tendering. Likewise with regard to leading practices related to quality cost estimates, the study found out that the performance of emerging contractors towards cost estimation requirements is low. Emerging firms are advised to make internal policy or guidelines for developing high quality cost estimates, to practice/ adopt a method that utilizes risk identification and uncertainty analysis techniques and to implement a system of integrated cost estimating practice via utilization of the twelve cost estimating tasks in order to ensure a high quality estimate.
