Item An Assessment on the Contribution of Whistle Blowing in Combating Corruption: The Case of Five Public Sectors in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2016-05) Belayneh, Mesfin; Kassahun, Meseret (PhD)The study aimed at assessing the contribution of whistle blowing in combating corruption in five public sectors in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Qualitative research design and descriptive case study approach was used. Purposive and snow ball sampling techniques were used in this study. Accordingly, ten whistle blowers were selected using snowball technique while five ethics liaison officers from public sectors and four key informants fi'om Federal Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission were selected using criteria based purposive sampling respectively. The data collection instruments were in-depth interview, and observation supplemented with field note. Indepth interview, key informant interview, observation and secondary data collection methods were employed in the study. Descriptive analytical method is used in to analyze the qualitative data. The main results of the study were: poor implementation of whistle blowing scheme with lower protection coverage for whistle blowers, whistle blowing confidentiality exposition and absence of transparent and timeliness feed backs for whistle blowers in public sectors; whistle blowers lower participation and lack of selfless stance; invisible and bureaucratic challenges on whistle blowers for detecting corruption offence in public sectors and the commitment of leaders found as a key factor in determining effective whistle blowing system in the public sectors. In conclusion, absence of effective whistle blowing system results lower participation of the employee to detect corrupt practice in their working places. The employee whistle blower participation is challenged by simple visible to huge invisible factors which are networked by actors found inside and outside of the public sectors. Leaders in the public sectors at different managerial hierarchy not only role players for the challenges of whistle blowing scheme but also certainly influence the effectiveness of whistle blowing system in the public sectors. Finally, the study implication for social work education, policy frame works, future researches and interventions needed were indicated. Key words: Contribution, Corruption, whistle blower, whistle blowing, public sectorItem Challenges In Raising Children With Auti st ic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), From The Fami ly Systems Perspective: With Special Emphasis on 'Nia Foundation-loy Center'(Addis Ababa University, 2013-06) Mekuria, Bezawit; Kassahun, Meseret (PhD)This study tri ed to explore the psychological, social and economic challenges faced by parents of children with autism. To this end, qualitative research design was used in order to have an indepth understanding of the matter where the selected study site was Nia foundation-Joy center for children with autism and related developmental disabilities. By using interview guide as data collection tool, sufficient data was collected where twenty research participants were selected purposively. The accounts of the study participants were analyzed rigorously Lls ing thematic anal ysis. The thematic analysis was based on interrelated steps involving translating and transcribing the collected data, coding and categorizing where it was reached at maj or themes. Findings of this study showed that the psychological challenge of parents raising children with autism was mainly stress, the social challenges were interruption of family system, lack of public awareness about autism, inadequate social service, limited social support and controlled social life and the economic challenges were effect on earnings and expenses. In addition, parents with low economic status were found to experience higher psychological social and economic challenges mainly because of lack of support in the above three dimensions. This research concludes the mandate that parents of children with autism need to get psychological, social and economic support from all stakeholders mainly government, community, service giving agenci es, and social work practitioners.Item Ethi opi an Criminal .Justice Policy Analys is: focus ol\.Ju ve nile Offend ers(Addis Ababa University, 2015-05) Girma, Yodit; Kassahun, Meseret (PhD)This paper analyzed the criminal justice policy using the cycle of social policy anal ysis model as a conceptual framework . The anal ys is fundamenta lly looked at whether or not principl es of social justice have been taken into consideration. The paper also tri ed to find out whi ch social probl ems have been dealt with following the adaptati on of the policy. Moreover, the paper analyzed the content of the policy fo cusing onj uvenile justice, in respect of the pertin ent laws of our country, especially the constituti on. Any obse rved inconsistency and di screpanc ies were forward ed, with the duty to bring to attention. Furthermore, the paper anal yzed wheth er or not the policy is based on the international stand ards set on Ju venile justice and how Ethiopia has incorporated these standards in to its domestic legislations and practi ce. Whil e the focus of this paper is on juvenile justice; the paper analyzes the overa ll principle of po licy mak ing process by using qua litati ve data anal ysis methods starting from the ini tiation to the evaluation of the policy. A case study approach within qualitat ive des ign was used . In the study two indiv iduals who participated in the process of the policy making had been interviewed. Data hom key in formants as well as key literature review were anal yzed rigorously through consistentl y comparing the major findin gs. The find ing suggests that the policy has not been properly implemented and evaluated and there a re no preventi ve mechani sms for juvenile offenders. Finaly, the need for a policy making guid eline in a nati onal perspecti ve as well as a need for citi zen awareness and di sseminati on of the policy for proper implement ation were forwarded as ma jor recommend at ions. Qualitative case study design was employed. To collect data, in-depth interview was made with fOUlieen individuals. The finding of the study depicted challenges migrant vendors encounter. Migrant vendors encounter challenges of finance, livelihood insecurity, physical insecurity, problem of shelter and health. They cope with these challenges employing social, economic and cultural capitals. Implication of the research to social work profession is that social workers can play the role of intervention through advocating for the study pmiicipants based on the finding ofthe study.Item Exploring Service Provided for Crime victim Children in the Criminal Justice System the Case Study of Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2014-10) Terfasa, Lelise; Kassahun, Meseret (PhD)This research was conducted to fill the gap observed in the area of service delivery to crime victim children pass ing through the cri minal justice system. The study popu lations were crime investigat ing po lice, public prosecutors and social workers se lected from five Sub of Ministry of Ju stice and Add is Ababa Police branch offices. Purpose of the research was to identify the service package de li vered to the chi ldren, the knowledge and ski ll base of professionals working with the chil dren, the utili zation of network and social workers engagement. The research utili zed a qualitative research des ign from which an exploratory research type was chosen. Trough a case study approach that utilized an in depth interview guide as a method of data coll ection and a qualitative data ana lysis method to analyze major find ings of the research. Based on the objective of the research, the find ing of the research indicated that, although there is a separate system establi shed in investigat ing and prosecuting crimes aga in st children and social workers are engaged in the process, the system does not have multidisciplinary team that is specially equ ipped with the special knowledge and sk ill to provide a uniform and standard serv ice to the children. Furthermore, the research has shown that there is lack of effective uti lizat ion of resource and networking. Based on the findings, the research has made a concluding remark that the system has a huge gap when compared with what's expected for a chi ld fr iendly criminal justice system to be. Finally the research has forwarded a recommend ation to help change the system at macro level and organizational level. It also indicated that the ro le of social workers as a practitioner and social work as a di scipline is deci sive in de livering an effective ch ild sensitive criminal justice process.Item The Rol es and C hall e n ges of pare nt s to Protect Teenage Children fro m We stern C ultural Influence A case stu dy at Bole sub- city, Add is Ababa , Ethi o pi a(Addis Ababa University, 2014-06) Kebede, Tigist; Kassahun, Meseret (PhD)This research assesses parents' awareness towards western culture including its negative and positive impacts. It mainly explores parents' roles to protect teenage children from western cultural influence and to embrace their own culture. It also explores both the internal and external parental challenges that hinders them to perfonn their roles. Moreover, it identifies the potential opportunities both internally and externally to enhance and sUpp0l1 parents' role. The research is conducted in Bole sub city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A qualitative research method, case study approach is employed to obtain comprehensive data and sixteen teenage child/children parents with different social economic background are participated in- depth interviewed. Consequently, the finding indicates that participants' have a certain understanding towards western cultures in general and majority of them indicated western cultures are very influential to teenage children. However, most of the participants' were confi dent that they are perfonning their roles to protect their children from western cultural influence but they identified they have not done much to embrace children their own culture. They al so revealed that from all fonns of western cultures particularly, they are highly challenged by their lack of awareness advancement of electronic technologies and media exposures of westerns' and their work situations. Based on the study major findings and rel ated literatures general conclusion and significant social work profession implications are forwarded. Besides a conceptual frame work is designed to summarize the basic findings and to show the conceptual relationships with the aim of the study.Item The Role o f Taekwondo Trainin g on th e Wellbeing of Adolesce nts in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2014-11) Emru, Michael; Kassahun, Meseret (PhD)The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of World Taekwondo (TKD) training on the well-being of adolescents in Addis A baba. The study examined the nature of taekwondo training, benefits and problems of practicing taekwondo, and the subjective well-being (SWB) of adolescents in different groups. A concurrent mixed method research design was used. Questionnaires and in-depth interviews were the major data collection procedures. A total number of 116 taekwondo adolescents and four coaches ji'om four taekwondo clubs participated in the study. Results of the studysholVed that: (1) the taekwondo training provided by thefour participant clubs was more of a modern/sport form of taekwondo ; (2) taeJo.vondo adolescents and coaches perceived that the benefits oftaeJo.vondo for adolescents are multifaceted, i.e., social benefits, physical benefits, mental benefits, self-defense, addiction avoidance, and other benejits; (3) taeJo.vondo adolescents had high level (mean points) of subjective well-being as measured by the Personal Well-being index-School Children (PWi-SC), i.e., 8 1.95 (95%Ci: 79. 70 to 84.20); (4) there was no statistically significant diffe rence among the three groups of taeJo.vondo adolescents (lower level belts (M=83.89), middle level belts (lvl = 80.38), and higher level belts(lvl = 79.55) when compared based on their mean points of PWi -SC (F(2, 8i) = 1.58, p > .05.); and (5) though majority (63.6%) of the respondents claimed that they did notface any problelll as a result of practicing taekwondo, the following were identified as major problems that could threaten the well-being of taekwondo adolescents: f amily related problems, community related problems, and competition related problems. Overall, the results of this study indicated that the training oftaelovondo can have a multifaceted positive contribution to adolescents' well-being.Item Running head: Health Seeking Behavior and Access to Health….Health Seeking Behavior and Access to Health Care of Street Involved Children: The Case of Ambo Town, Central Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2017-06) Minase, Mesfin; Kassahun, Meseret (PhD)Street involved children underutilize health services worldwide despite their miserable health conditions and their frequent illness. Why health services do not reach the children and how they respond to illnesses, as a result, are critical research areas. Describing health risks to selected street involved children in Ambo town, this study explored their health seeking behavior and access to health care. The study was undertaken in the first half of the year 2017, and 33 children who aged 10 to 18 years participated in interview and focus group discussions. They were selected through no-random snow ball sampling technique. Key informant interview and observation were also employed in this qualitative study. Findings indicated that the children rarely visited health facilities despite their frequent illnesses and access entitlements. Constrained by cost of payable health services and violation of their entitlements to wavier service, the children widely used sleeping off illnesses, medicine from pharmacies and traditional treatments when they got sick. Sensitivity towards the health plights of the children and commitment to realize their recognized health care entitlements are required to improve their health conditions.
