Institutional Support and Psychological Well-Being of Orphaned and Vulnerable Children in Some Selected Orphanages in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
(Addis Ababa University, 2025-11) Hiyab Teklehaimanot; Abera Getachew
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between institutional support and psychological well-being among institutionalized orphaned children selected from Kechene and Kolfe government owned homes in Addis Ababa. Quantitative data were collected from 178 randomly selected participants using institutional and psychological well-being scale. Descriptive (percentage, mean, standard deviation) and inferential statistics (t-test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Pearson) were employed to summarize and report the data. The findings of the study revealed moderate level of psychological well-being among participants, particularly in autonomy (M=3.42, SD=.70), environmental mastery (M=3.55, SD=.64, and personal growth (M=3.59, SD = .64). In addition, from selected demographic factors such as gender, ages, and duration of stay, age and duration of stay exerted statistically significant influence on the well-being of orphaned children while the influence of gender was not significant. Moreover, findings demonstrated that, institutional support in overall has statistically significant relationship with psychological well-being (r =.417, p < 0.01). This indicates that higher levels of institutional support are associated with higher levels of psychological well-being in general. From the dimensions of institutional support, protection was found to be correlated with autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, personal relations purpose in life, and self-acceptance. Therefore, higher levels of overall institutional support score are associated with higher levels of psychological well-being among orphaned and vulnerable children in general. The regression analysis result indicated Institutional support explained 17.4% of the variance in psychological wellbeing. This means that as institutional support increases, psychological wellbeing also increases significantly. Keywords: children, orphans, institutional support, psychological well-being
