Item Soil Conservation Practices and Its Contribution to Food Security in Chencha Woreda, Southern Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2019-10) Hassen, Abdi; Bantider PhD, AmareThis study was aimed to analyze the role of soil conservation practices to household food security in Chencha highlands, Ethiopia. Random sampling procedures were used to obtain three representative kebeles. From three kebeles of chencha woreda a total of 276 respondents were selected by random sampling method based on the proportion of population size. The method of data collection was both primary and secondary data sources. Data analysis was undertaken by using Descriptive and Inferential Statistics like t-test, chi-square test, frequency and percentage. Logistic regression model was employed to analyzed factors affecting food security status of households. Analysis was done using STATA version 22 software. The result indicated that there was a significant difference between adopters and non-adopters in terms of household age, farm size, family size, off-farm income, Calorie per adult equivalent per day. The result also revealed a significant difference between adopters and non-adopters in terms of sex, education, farm slope, extension service, marital status. There was statistically significant difference between secured and insecure in terms socio-economic characteristics such as age, farm size in hectare, farm income, sex education farm slope, access to extension service. Therefore, this study recommends that soil conservation is multidimensional impact worthy of consideration to be incorporated in policy intervention by NGOs or government designed projects Development agents of the woreda or other project officers should give maximum attention to dissemination of information about soil conservation technology at door. Even more, an opportunity of employment has to be created by the regional government as it helps in the battle with food insecurity.Item Study on the Practices of Bale Robe Educational Radio(Addis Ababa University, 2015) Hassen, Abdi; Lencho, Negeri (PhD)Nowadays, educational technologies are flourishing and schools should use them appropriately to achieve the needed objectives. Moreover, Mass media, especia lly, electronic ones like radio and television , have the power to suppOl1 class teachers on carefully selected topics. Specifically, educational radios can cover the Illost remote areas and help schools which lack best teachers and materials. This study focused on in vestigating the practices of Bale Robe educationa l radio. To this end, the study employed mainly qualitative research design. As a result, focus group discussions, individual in-depth interviews, and observation were employed to gather the necessary data. Additionally, documents of the radio station were analyzed depending on th eir context and language used. The study was situated within the theoretical framework of dia logical pedagogy. The findings of the study show that the Bale Robe Educational radio produces different entertainment and educational programs with the educational and entertainment messages. It also produces programs that promote the local language and culture through local music, narration and drama in Afan Oromo. Moreover, the study reveals that the Bale Robe Educational radio gives more air time for formal education in an official regional language. The findings again reveal that the Bale Robe Educational radio employees participate in the administration of the station as well as in the production of the programs. The practitioners who participated in the individual in-depth interviews and focus group discus sions confirmed that the radio station has various challenges like lack of training, logistics and dig ital materials among olhers.
