Item Activities Performed by Volunteers: The Case of Mekedonia Humanitarian Association(Addis Ababa University, 2017-06) Kassaye, Ashenafi; Hagos, Ashenafi (PhD)Volunteers are defined as those who help others with no expectation of monetary rewards and volunteerism as a type of activity that is intended to improve the wellbeing of others. However, Activities Performed by Volunteers is not well studied dimension in the Ethiopian context in general and in the study area in particular. Consequently, the major purpose of this study was to investigate activities performed by volunteers of Mekedonia Humanitarian Association. The study used qualitative method with case study approach. Purposive sampling technique was used to select samples. Data were gathered through interview, observation and document review. The collected data were organized and analyzed through qualitative research approach. Findings of this study revealed that, there are many motivational factors that make individuals to volunteer in social services. Among these, the main are to get mental satisfaction, to get God‟s blessing, to help succeed the organization its objectives, serve the community and getting opportunity to develop skills. The study found out that volunteers perform various activities ranging from simple tasks to more professional duties. Promoting the organization mission and values is among the activities volunteers perform. It deals with analysis to assess the effectiveness of Productive Safety Net Program in improving the livelihoods of women beneficiaries in the study wereda and identifying outstanding challenges related to the program regarding gender mainstreaming and to come up with relevant recommendations to improve gender division of labour in Productive Safety Net Program. Household survey using questioners; focus group discussion with PSNP members; and key informant interviews with relevant stakeholders were employed to collect the necessary data. A total of 120 households were selected. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize results and present them in tables. Statistical tests like t-tests and chi-square were used to test differences and associations between variables. Correlation analysis was also employed to understand the relationship between some variables. The researches results revealed that the productive safety net program has significant contribution to address the existing unfair gender division of labour in the study area while it does not fully address the issue to the extent that the program intended. It can be recommended that gender division of labour issues should be properly considered during design in future interventions of PSNP and other similar programs to address the abovementioned issues in a better way. Policymakers and development practitioners need to consider contextual gender analysis and participation of women during design and implementation of any development program. Regular monitoring and evaluation mechanisms should be reviewed through the gender lens so that the program will have better contribution to address gender division of labour in the rural setting like that of the study areas. Key words: productive safety net program, gender division of labour, gender mainstreaming, public workItem The Assessment on the Nature of Services Provision for Trafficked Women in local Non-Government Organizations in Addis Ababa: The Case of Three Selected NGOs(Addis Ababa University, 2017-06) Dejene, Mestawet; Hagos, Ashenafi (PhD)The study aimed to assess the nature of services provision for trafficked women returnee in the case of local non-government organizations in Addis Ababa. The study is qualitative research and has employed a single instrumental case study. This study is also cross-sectional since it was conducted once. The participants of this research, who were selected based on data saturation, were the villagers affected by villagization which was implemented in the area. The woreda government officials with the knowledge of the implemented villagization also took part in this study as key informants. The data were collected using in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, key informant interviews, observation and document review and analyzed by employing thematic analysis method. The data collection started in 25th February, 2017 and ended in 31st March, 2017. The study revealed that villagers of the three villages had tough lives before villagization. They had a very limited access to social services like health, clean water, education, mill and transportation services. They also had poor communication and interaction with one another, including with the government because they were scattered and far away. They faced challenges in terms of security and lacked protection. Women also faced challenges in terms of gender violence and high work load because of the distance of social services. The only good thing about this life was farming since people had fertile lands. But, when villagization was implemented, the lives of the villagers improved in that they started to have a better access to social services. The study showed that villagization was implemented voluntarily and based on the consent of the local people. No one was forcibly relocated. People now have a better communication and interaction. Businesses also developed. The study showed that there is a harmony and an improved security in the villages. Villagers are happy about villagization due to the positive changes though they are facing some challenges which include the inability to farm like before and the decline in production. The other challenge is the distance between villages and the farmlands in the fields. Villagers think that villagization would have been very good if it was implemented by providing the necessary services first. However, it is possible to conclude that villagization has significantly improved the lives of the villagers by bringing positive changes which did not exist before. This study has implication for service, policy, research and education and can be used for intervention purposes. It urges service providers to reconsider the issue of basic services and provide additional ones to the relocated people. The study serves as a basis for future policy making and influences policy makers when designing policies involving population relocation. This study shows the need for further study on villagization in relation to its positive aspects and can be used as a baseline for another research on villagization. The study also has an important implication for social work education in that it can provide valuable information and be used in migration education. It enhances the knowledge on population relocation and helps others to learn about the significance of villagization in improving the lives of scattered rural people. The purpose of this study is to explore and describe the integration challenges after they left the institution and integrated to the wider society of Addis Ababa. Kechene orphanage is home only for girls so that all the study participants were females. Qualitative approach has been employed so that it is exploratory and descriptive by nature. Purposive sampling technique was employed to select informants. A total of ten respondents were involved in the study. Primary and secondary data collection method was used. Primary data was collected from the study participants through in-depth interview and focus group discussion. Secondary data was collected from published and unpublished journals, books and documents. The finding of this study showed that death of both or either of parents is the main reason for institutionalization of the orphans. Orphanage life impacts the life of orphans by isolating them from the society and leads them to be stranger for the societal life. By the time they leave the orphanage, they suffer from lack of skills to integrate to the society and encounter cultural conflictsItem Effect ofInstitutionalization on Social Integration of Orphaned Individuals Reintegrated to the Community: The Case of Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2014-05) Degefa, Genet; Hagos, Ashenafi (PhD)The stud y was conducted on individuals who we re raised up in Kechene orphanage and reinte grated to the socie ty of Addi s Ababa. It mainly focused on the experiences which made these adolescent’s girls to become involved in delinquent behavior as well as the way they are treated and rehabilitated in the remand and rehabilitation center. Using social constructivist theoretical paradigm, the study employed a qualitative case study with descriptive purpose and cross sectional design. Due to the difficulty of easily accessing female juvenile delinquents in the center through other sampling, purposive sampling was used to select nine study participants. Additionally, three key informants from the remand and rehabilitation center (a total of twelve individuals) participated in the study. The primary data were mainly collected through in-depth interview and the interviews were recorded and transcribed using verbatim transcription, after which pre-coding, coding, categorizing and theme were developed for analysis. Additionally, data also were collected from observations, document reviews and secondary sources. Findings of this study indicate that intersection of multiple life experiences like histories of abuse, lack of parental support, school/ education problems and peer influence added with family instabilities made the adolescent girls vulnerable to delinquent behaviors. The findings of the study also shows that there are four basic responsive programs (counseling, vocational training, formal education and medical health) which are being given in the remand home which aim at rehabilitating the juvenile delinquents. Beside these basic program components, the remand home provides different services like food and shelter, library and recreational services. In providing these services the remand home faces some challenges that need a quick response from concerned bodies. The study has indicated that gender-responsive programs are lacking to meet the specific needs of female juvenile delinquentsItem The Experiences of Graduate Unemployed Youth in Tabor Sub City of Hawassa City(Addis Ababa University, 2017-06) Lencha, Temesgen; Hagos, Ashenafi (PhD)IX Abstract This research was conducted in Hawassa city to assess experience of graduate unemployed youth. As qualitative study, I employed descriptive phenomenological research. Interview, focus group discussion, observation and document review were employed. Heterogeneous purposive non-random sampling technique was used to collect data from the youth. Among the research participants, ten youth engaged in in-depth interview while six youth had part in focus group discussion. The inclusion criteria are the youth who graduated in diploma and bachelor degree and not secured any job since their graduation at least for one year. The finding of the study indicated graduate unemployed youth faced long-term unemployment; as a result, the youth were suffering from psychological, social and economic hardship. The finding also indicated that unemployed youth are more likely exposed to engage in social ills such as crime and addiction. The youth also suffer from family and social stereotype deprived from certain privileges. In the study, it is revealed that the youth withdrew themselves from various societal engagements. Moreover, the family of the youth also stressed economically and psychologically due to the fact that they did not get something in return from their investment in their children‟s education. Corruption and nepotism, skill mismatch, need to work only in comfortable areas are the major causes of unemployment in the study area. Data were gathered using in-depth interview and observation. A total of 10 respondents, between 14 to 18 years of age were used. The research employed qualitative, descriptive phenomenological approach to describe the experience of poor children. Children considered in this study shared their life experience as a life lacking happiness. The children blame their families for the challenges they face in life and for their unhappy life. The study revealed that shouldering household responsibilities and burdens, absence of parental support, social discrimination, sexual harassment by their own biological parent, and lack and denial of acceptance for their ideas within the family are challenges of the children that had left a negative print in their minds. The main challenges that poor children are facing in their daily lives include: missing basic needs, receiving inappropriate treatment and being exposed to various types of abuses and neglect. The study indicated that even though children are affected by lack of materials, they prioritize love and care from parents and society as a major risk factor to their wellbeing. Children from their own parents and caregivers in the households appear to be abused emotionally and physically. Children who lack family love and care tried to commit suicide, desire to commit patricide and matricide, feel lonely, depressed due to the influence they face in their household and society. Poor children are not passive victims of various socio cultural induced challenges. They actively employ coping strategies such as praying, peer support, and performing different mental relaxation activities to tackle their problems. However, there is minimal counseling service and no recreation activities in the studied organization that is necessary to help the affected children, which requires proper intervention in the area to improve the wellbeing of the affected childrenItem The Experiences of Young Workers in Artisanal Mining: The Case of Wera Jarso Woreda(Addis Ababa University, 2014-06) Mesfin, Kindalem; Hagos, Ashenafi (PhD)This study is concerned with assessing the work experience of young workers who are engaged in artisanal mining (AM) in Wera Jarso Woreda, Oromia Region, with the objective of exploring the major factors relating to their work. The researcher has employed case study method with a descriptive purpose, supported by qualitative research methodology. The basic research question was: what factors constitute the work experience of young workers? For this purpose, the data requirements for the study were collected from different sources. The primary data were collected from 22 respondents of which 14 of them (young workers) and the rest eight respondents (community members) were selected by using purposive sampling using their leadership position and expertise as points of reference for community member. Moreover, the study made use of documents as secondary data sources such as firms’ guiding principles, rules and regulations; reports of ILO and other organizations, and articles. In-depth interview, key informant interview, FGD and observation checklist were also used as tool of collecting primary data. The data collected were analyzed using thematic analysis or major idea analysis. The findings from the study revealed that the young workers are having unpleasant experiences as reflected in the work setting (having poor social condition, unsuitable landscapes, deteriorated environment accompanied with low payment), health and occupational safety issues (being exposed to health problems, absence of health insurance, absence of safety equipments, using outdated and obsolete tools and exposure to injuries). They have little or no professional knowledge about the extraction, processing, production and marketing process of the minerals. The challenges faced by young workers categorized in to four major domains: education, health, economic and social domains of life, benefits obtained from being involved in AM and finally future aspiration and goals of young workers are determinants to change their current situation basically by being involved in education or business. The study has concluded an intensive social work intervention at all levels is needed and this implies that, social workers are expected to integrate problem solving techniques and models related to the problems young workers by involving themselves in research, advocacy, practice and education. A qualitative exploratory research method with a cross-sectional case study strategy was used. The main research participants were Ethiopian children who were applying for orphan relative visas at the time of data collection. Additionally, key informants from MoWA and Federal First Instance Court participated in the study. With the help of a semi structured interview guide, in-depth interviews conducted on reasons that lead children to apply for an Australian orphan relative visa, expectations from such placements, availability of pre placement services and legal bases for such care arrangements. Additionally, data also was derived from observations, document reviews and secondary sources. The data collected from different sources were analyzed using thematic and cross case analysis methods. The study identified two main categories of children who apply for international kinship care placements in Australia: Children who cannot be cared for by family resources in the country because of permanent loss of parental care or inability of parents to take care of them, and Children who use this arrangement as a mechanism to access a better life in Australia. Children expect to get better education, employment, material benefits and living conditions after placement abroad. However, they express concerns about how well they will be treated by relatives abroad. Pre-placement services provided for these children lack a standardized and holistic approach. Furthermore, lack of clarity on the legal protection that should be given to children in international kinship care arrangement puts them in a precarious socio-legal situationItem Exploring International K~nship Care Arrangement: The case of Ethiopian Children applying for Australian Orphan relative Visa(Addis Ababa University, 2016-06) Tesfaye, Asnakech; Hagos, Ashenafi (PhD)This study explored international kinship care arrangement in Ethiopia, jocusing on Ethiopian children who apply for an Australian Orphan Relative Visa.
