Evaluation of Gravelly Clay Blanket Foundation Treatment and Remedial Measures for Piping Control in Embankment Dam: A Case Study of Kalid Dijo Dam
(Addis Ababa University, 2025-10) Hafsoa Getu; Tezera Friew (PhD)
This thesis aimed to evaluate gravelly clay blanket and Remedial Measures for Piping Control in the dam foundation at Kalid Dijo Dam, employing a comprehensive methodology that integrated extensive geotechnical investigations, geological surveys, laboratory testing, and advanced numerical modeling with GeoStudio 2022. The primary objective was to assess the effectiveness of Gravelly Clay Blanket and foundation modifications in controlling seepage and enhancing dam stability. The analysis focused on static seepage and slope stability assessments across multiple critical sections of the dam, specifically at chainages 0+520, 0+770, 1+123, 1+228, and 1+670, using detailed geotechnical data and flow path evaluations. The results demonstrated that the proposed foundation treatments such as increasing the thickness of impermeable gravelly clay layers and installing cutoff slurry walls substantially reduced water flux by approximately 85–90%, effectively lowering hydraulic gradients and minimizing the risk of piping. Validation work through flow path and flux comparison confirmed the reliability of the numerical models, indicating that the optimized foundation configurations can prevent internal erosion phenomena under static conditions. The safety factors derived from static slope stability analyses consistently exceeded critical thresholds, further affirming the structural integrity of the dam with the implemented modifications. Overall, the outputs substantiate that site-specific foundation interventions, supported by rigorous modeling and validation, are vital in mitigating piping risks, ensuring long-term dam safety, and conserving water resources.
