Assessment on Employees Relation : The Case of Abyssinia Bank Three District in Addis Ababa
(Addis Ababa University, 2022-06) Girma Bekele; Wubsht Bekalu (PhD)
For the attainment of organizational goals and objectives, the prevalence of good employee relations between management and employees is critical. Labor unions play a critical role in improving workplace harmony and cooperation. The function of labor unions in the Bank of Abyssinia is examined in this paper. Using a descriptive research design, the major goal of this study was to assess the role of labor unions in employment relations in BOA. Both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies were used in this study. The study relied on a questionnaire and interviews.256 questionnaires were issued to conduct sample surveys. Both open-ended and closed-ended questionnaires were included in the study. A total of 250 of the 256 questionnaires were returned, yielding a 97% response rate. An interview was conducted to collect qualitative data with union and management representatives. The descriptive analysis of the study indicates that most members disagree with the union's ability to play its role in employee relations. The role of the union in collective agreement negotiation and its practices; in employee participation individually and collectively; in grievance and dispute handling; in members’ communication and voice being heard; in developing industrial democracy; and in teaching organization employees to stand for their rights was insignificant. On the other hand, the finding also shows that despite the fact that the real role of the union was not significant in protecting members' benefits, they were perceived positively by the members. The other major finding was that the management was not willing to work in partnership with the labor union. Based on this, the researcher draws some recommendations. So as to revitalize the union, leaders working time should be improved from the current one day in a month to if possible full time or at least two days in a week, it should strengthen its structure at district and branch levels and provide capacity-building to union executives. The union should respect its rules and conduct a meeting with its members at least once a year and have a periodical that serves as a medium of communication. The union should encourage members to discuss problems with their immediate boss and forward unsolved problems to the union. The union should educate members about the benefits of being a member so that it can increase its membership. So as to resolve problems with the management, the union should organize a platform, if possible, by themselves or with the help of a third party, for an open discussion that will bring a paradigm shift in labor union and management relationships so that they will work in a partnership. Key words: labor union, employee relations, conflict resolution, participation, collective agreement, industrial democracy

The Effect of Work Environment on Employees' Job Satisfaction: The Case of Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation
(Addis Ababa University, 2022-06) Girma Bekele; Wubshet Bekalu (PhD)
The work environment is the sum of interrelationships that exists between the workers and the environment in which they work. An effective work environment means making the workplace attractive, comfortable, satisfactory, and motivating to the workers to give workers a sense of pride and purpose in what they do. The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of the work environment on employees’ job satisfaction in Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation. The explanatory study design was implemented by collecting data from primary sources using self-administrated questionnaires which were filled by randomly selected 261 permanent employees. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics with the aid of SPSS version 26 computer software. Correlation analysis and simple linear regression were used to analyze the gathered data. The results of the study indicate that work environment dimensions have a significant positive relationship with employees' job satisfaction. The descriptive result of the study showed the mean score of the physical work environment like recreational facilities, libraries with access to books, computers, and the internet shows a low mean score. The descriptive result of this study showed the mean score of psycho social work environments (motivation (2.6584), training and development (2.5560), the relationship between management and employees (2.5111), and the relation between employees (co-workers) (2.8739) which is low. This shows the level of motivation, training, and development, found in the Ethiopia Broadcasting Corporation is not enough and adequate, and the relationship between management and employees and co-workers is not good as they expected. The result of multiple linear regression indicates that the R square of the model is 0.919, which shows that approximately 91.9%of variance in a dependent variable (employees' job satisfaction) can be explained by the linear combination of the independent variables work environment (physical work environment and psycho social work environment) while 8.1% of the variation in employee job satisfaction can be attributed to other variables which are not considered in this study. So, the researcher recommended in Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation should give attention to creating conducive and favorable conditions to increase employees' job satisfaction. Future researches may take branches of EBC throughout Ethiopia into consideration to generalize for more population. Key words: Employee satisfaction, Work environment, Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation
