Item Evaluation of Imported and Local Wax for Cheese Processing(Addis Ababa University, 2007-07) Getachew, Solomon; Admassu, Shimelis (PhD)Despite large production and exportation of beeswax, the dairy processors import significant amount of wax for hard cheese coating. The drawback of the local beeswax which is being used for hard cheese processing is the cracking nature of the product, which in turn has an influence in the quality of cheese. The rationale of this study is to evaluate the locally available beeswax for hard cheese coating instead of imported wax. This study was conducted at Dairy Development Enterprise. Three samples were used for this study. Two locally available beeswax produced from honeycomb and from ’tej sefef’ and one imported wax as a control. The production method, which are very important for a good quality of beeswax are described in view of obtaining maximum quality. The physico-chemical characteristics of beeswax and imported wax are discussed. The mean value of the different parameters of the wax from ‘tej sefef’ and from honeycomb indeed, within the intervals commonly accepted by different countries specification. Saponification value (102.8500), specific gravity (0.9619), total volatile matter (0.4500) and melting point (64.3333) are slightly higher in wax from ‘tej sefef’ than wax from honeycomb; 99.7333, 0.9497, 0.3400, 64.1333 respectively. Whereas acid value and ash content are some what higher in wax produced from honeycomb. There was no significant difference between wax from honeycomb and wax from ‘tej sefef’ .The mean value of the different parameters of imported wax used for cheese coating was not within the interval of commonly accepted by different countries except total volatile matter and ash content. Moreover, there were significant difference between the two beeswax and imported wax. In the case of wax for cheese coating, beeswax produced from ‘tej sefef’ was cracked. There was significance difference between imported wax and beeswax produced from ‘tej sefef’ .However, there was no significant difference between imported wax and beeswax produced from honeycomb. The result of the data analysis revealed that beeswax produced from honeycomb gives the most promising result in this study, if the iv optimum processing conditions are maintained to obtain pure beeswax which can meet the standard.Item Practices and Challenges of Alternative Basic Education in Addis Ababa: The Case of Arada SubCity(Addis Ababa University, 2010-06) Getachew, Solomon; Fenta, Tilahun (PhD)Basic Education is a foundation of all development endeavors and a fundamental right of every member of a society. Providing basic education for all children the principal assets and future bases of a country is the wisest investment. Ethiopia is one of those sub- Saharan African countries with the least participation of school age children in primary schools. To provide basic education to all citizen and achieve universal primary education by the year 2015, the government has launched different programs i.e Non - formal and Alternative basic education. The Alternative basic education program, thus, the program has served as an alternative approaches to complement the formal education program, so that it plays a great role in providing educational access for adults and children. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the practice and challenges of implementation of ABE in Arada sub city Addis Ababa City administration. Based on the purpose of the study, the learning environment, the practice of the program, support for ABE program facilitators in terms of training, the availability of curriculum materials and challenges encountered were assessed . To this end, survey method was used for the study. Data were gathered from officials, facilitators and adult learners. Data collection tools were questionnaire, interview and focus group discussion. The data gathered through questionnaire were analyzed using appropriate statistical tools the percentage, mean, standard deviation and one way ANOVA. Whereas the data gathered through interview and focus group discussion were transcribed, analyzed and triangulated with the quantitative data where necessary and appropriate. Findings of the study revealed that the practice of the ABE program have contributed a lot to providing, learning opportunity for adults and out-of school children. Addis Ababa Education bureau used one curriculum for both adults and out- of school children, facilitators training, their salary and the incentives provided were not sufficient, supervision and monitoring and awareness creation for the stakeholder were found to be low, there were problems of text books and facilitators manual. Based on the major findings certain recommendations were made. Addis Ababa education office should revise the ABE curriculum, supervision and follow up should be strengthened, the community awareness should be promoted, facilitators should be provided with short- term up grading training, and fair incentives for facilitators should be in place to motivate them.Item Teachers' Process of Preparing Teaching and Learning of Deaf Students at Alpha Special School Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2016-06) Getachew, Solomon; Tsega, Sewalem (PhD)Teachers who educate deaf students should demonstrate competency in the preparation of the subjects they teach, as well as give additional support to their students. The main purpose of this study is to assess a teacher's' process of preparing, teaching and learning of deaf students at Alpha Special School, Addis Ababa. In order to achieve the objective of the study, 16 respondents participated in the study. The result of the study was analyzed qualitatively. The findings of the study indicated a lack of appropriate instructional strategies, lack of training opportunities, lack of attention to classroom preparation, and the absence of support and communication. All were found to be major problems. The study shows that half of the teachers who participated in this study did not have enough training in sign language, causing communication barriers between the students and teachers. The deaf students’ learning and their relationship with their teachers was impeded by a lack of communication and preparation. Based on the findings of this study, recommendations were proposed, that promote the development of a teacher's’ preparation, sign language skills and student supportItem Two-Mode Coherent and Laser Light Beams(Addis Ababa University, 2011-06) Getachew, Solomon; Kassahun, Fesseha (PhD)In this thesis we study the statistical properties of two-mode coherent and laser light beams in a cavity coupled to two-mode vacuum reservoir. We obtain c-number Langevin equations using the pertinent master equation. Making use of the solutions of the resulting c-number Langavien equations, we calculate the antinormally ordered characteristic function de ned in Heisenberg picture. With the help of this characteristic function, we determine the Q function for a two-mode coherent light as well as for a two mode laser light. Then the Q function is used to calculate the mean and variance of the photon number sum and di erence. On the other hand, using the aforementioned Q functions, we determine the Q function for the superposition of two-mode coherent and laser light beams. Finally, using the resulting Q function, we obtain the mean and the variance of the photon number sum and di erence
