    Experiences and Coping Strategies of People with Physical Injuries due to Road Traffic Accident: The Case of Patients Admitted to Tikur Anbessa Hospital

    Physical injuries due to road traffic accident are increasing every day. The deleterious effect of physical injuries due to road traffic accident on an individual's psychological condition as well as family and social relationships is undeniable. Even though the problem demands comprehensive interventions, much has not been done towards supporting people with physical injuries. Moreover, studies conducted using quantitative research methods focused on cause, magnitude, prevention, outcome of road traffic injury. Studies emphasize on numerical measurements which does not indicate experiences and coping strategies of victims of road traffic accident. Thus, this study explored experiences and coping strategies of people with physical injuries due to road traffic accident using qualitative phenomenological study. Ten (10) participants with physical injuries were selected using purposive sampling. In-depth interview was applied as data collection method and data were analyzed thematically. The findings of this study showed that people with physical injuries are receiving support from loved ones i.e., family, friends, other patients, neighbors, and colleague. In addition, they are receiving incomplete treatment, which is sole, routine and delayed. Uninformed medical decision (before and after a procedure) is also the features of treatment support that they are receiving. For them admitted in a hospital is a negative experience. They are using support from loved ones; learn from others, focusing on positive and personal life experience as coping mechanism. Identifying support sources can be effective in their adaptation with the situation and improvement of the quality of their life moreover; known victims‟ experience of staying in hospital can help to improve multifaceted support services. The study highlights the importance of social work profession in the area and related issues. Key words: Road traffic accident, people with Physical injuries, support
