    The prevalence of diabetic foot ulcers and associated factors among Diabetes patients at Mekedonia Medium Clinic, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

    Background : DFUs remain a major complication of diabetes with high morbidity and mortality rates. Study on the prevalence and risk factors related to DFU is thus vital for the purposes of its prevention and management in resource constraint settings like Ethiopia. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of DFUs and identify the key risk factors among diabetic patients at Mekedonia Charity Association Medium Clinic, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: The research implemented cross-sectional study from November 20-23, 2024, involving 174 diabetic patients selected via convenience sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, interviews, and clinical assessments. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with DFU, with statistical significance set at a p-value < 0.05. Results: The prevalence of DFUs in the study population was 22.99% (40 participants), with 91.1% of cases being type 2 diabetes. Factors significantly associated with DFUs included poor foot care (AOR: 3.932, 95% CI: 1.113–13.891), peripheral neuropathy (AOR: 6.223, 95% CI: 1.309–29.596), diabetes duration >10 years (AOR: 5.463, 95% CI: 2.603–28.013), HbA1c levels >7% (AOR: 50.0, 95% CI: 10.0–250.0), history of trauma (AOR: 4.5, 95% CI: 2.0 15.0), and obesity (AOR: 10.0, 95% CI: 2.5–40.0). Conclusion: The study revealed a high prevalence of DFUs among diabetic patients, with poor foot care, peripheral neuropathy, prolonged diabetes duration, poor glycemic control, trauma, and obesity identified as significant risk factors. Focused interventions to improve foot care, enhance early detection of peripheral neuropathy, and optimize glycemic control are essential to reducing the burden of DFUs in this population.
