Item An Investigation of History Teaching Learning Process: A Survey Study of The Current Status In Secondary Schools of Hadiya Zone- Snnprs(Addis Ababauniversity, 2006-06) Bekele, Desta; Fanta, Tilahun (Professor)Different researchers in their studies identified several areas of concern for history educators regarding inadequate and unsatisfactory educational provisions that tend to inhibit instruction and learning history in secondary schools. In view of this, such kind of study with regard to the problems of history teaching and learning in our secondary schools is highly needed. The study was conducted to investigate the teaching and learning of history with respect to the effects of some of the teacher and school related variables. Attempts were also made to examine classroom-teaching competences. To this end, a descriptive survey research technique was employed. The descriptive survey research attempted to describe the present status of history teaching and learning, with particular reference to the secondary schools of Hadiya zone- SNNPRS. The findings of this descriptive study are reflective of the situation in these schools . The survey derived data from all the six secondary schools of the study area. Within these schools, all history teachers (34 in number) and thirty-six students were selected as sources of information using available and purposive sampling techniques respectively. Questionnaires, classroom observation, interviews, and documents were the instruments of data collection. The data gathered through these instruments were analyzed USIng percentages, mean scores and descriptive statements. The present study has found out a number of interrelated factors, which hinder the teaching, and learning of history. Some among these are; the insufficient training and orientation of teachers in higher learning institutions; the incompatibility between the volume of the book and the period allowed; the insufficient provision of instructional resources that c(fuld' be used for history instruction; and history teaching is highly textbook oriented. The results of the study also show a large-group instruction with lecture teaching strategy predominates the history classroom and the low level of English language ability of students in understanding and following Up of the subject matter of history. The findings further indicated that the overall level of history teacher classroom performance was found to be low in view of questioning skills, content knowledge, and general teaching characteristics. Based on these findings and the conclusions drawn, related recommendations regarding the improvement of teacher training and the provision of the necessary instructional resources were forwardedItem The Practice of Teachers' Continuous Professional Development Program In Selected General Secondary Schools of Jimma Zone(Addis Ababauniversity, 2012-06) Burayu, Gossa; Fanta, Tilahun (Professor)The study was initiated to explore the practices of teachers ' continuous professional development program in Jimma Zone selected general secondary schools. It attempted to identify the extent of teachers ' participation in CP D activities, the effects of CP D program in improving the process of teaching and learning, the roles played by stakeholders, and factors affecting the implementation of CPD program. To realize the purpose of the study, descriptive urvey research design was employed The study was carried out on eight general secondary schools that were selected using random sampling technique. The study also involved 111 teachers, 16 secondary school principals, eight secondary school supervisors and eight "\IlIoreda education officers. Based on the analysis, it was found that teachers were engaging moderately in only some CPD activities; activities such as discussion meetings, induction, mentoring, peer observation, and sharing good experience with in school were practiced;qoCPD program has positil e effects in improving teaching learning process; the stakeholders, particularly, woreda education officers, supervisors and principals have not played significant role in effective implementation of CP D program; lack of teachers' commitment, lack of teachers' positive altitude towards the CP D program, lack of access to information, lack of support ji-om woreda education, and lack of incentives were the major obstructions of the program. Accordingly, the conclusion drawn is that the practice of CP D program in secondary schools under consideration was less than expectation. Finally, recommendations were proposed emphasizing on the importance of stimulating teachers' interest, creating awareness, creating strong and commilled network among stakeholders, and provision oj information technology access so as to improve the implementation of teacher' CP D programItem Teachers’ Attitudes and Perceptions towards 1:5 Students’grouping As Teaching Strategy: The Case in Nefas-Silk-Lafto Sub-City, Second Cycle (5-8) Primary Schools(Addis Ababa University, 2017-06) Bekele, Chali; Fanta, Tilahun (Professor)The purpose of this study was to identify teachers‘ Attitudes and perceptions towards one –to- five (1:5) students group form teaching strategy and to investigate the reason why teachers have negative/positive attitudes and perceptions towards this teaching strategy in second cycle (grade 5-8) primary schools. The study used mixed method that QUAN→qual(explanatory sequential design). The study used lottery method to select six (6) primary schools from 20 primary schools that were found in Nefas –Slik-Lafto sub – city. By using stratified sampling and random sampling techniques 210 second cycle primary school teachers were selected for the sample of the study. From these 210 teachers, 198 teachers were selected for quantitative part and 12 were selected for qualitative part. In the first phase of the quantitative part, 163 teachers participated (return rate was 82.3%) by filling in the questionnaire .The collected data was analyzed by frequency distribution, weighted Mean and percentage. Additionally, t- test of independent samples test of significance was used to identify, if in case, there is difference between male and female teachers‘ attitudes and perceptions towards one-to-five teaching strategy. The findings of this study revealed that teachers have negative attitudes and perceptions towards one-to-five student group form teaching strategy. The test of significance result also revealed that there is statistically significance difference between male and female teachers‘ attitudes and perceptions towards 1:5 student group teaching strategy. In the second phase, qualitative data was collected through interview based on the findings of first phase (i.e. the reason why teachers have negative attitude and perception towards 1:5 students group form). The collected data analyzed qualitatively and triangulated with the first result. It indicated ―the inconsistency of 1:5 teaching strategy with teachers‘ beliefs of teaching, teachers were not trained in it as teaching method in teachers‘ training institution, but 1:5 grouping was recommended by government for all government sectors, farmers, women, for unemployed ,..,and also attempt to use it as teaching method ,not research based and recommendation from university lead teachers to perceive it as more political than teaching strategy ‖ were the reasons for their negative attitudes and perceptions. The researcher suggests here that teachers need to be trained on the theoretical background and principles of 1:5 group at teacher training higher institutions and the issue of methodological aspects with respect to the new teaching innovation ―what, why and how teachers have to use it in instructional strategy‖ would be more successfully and effectively implemented and if it would be addressed to teachers by higher institution than politicians. Key words: one-to-five student group, perception, attitude.
