Valorization of Orange Peel for Dye Synthesis and Its Application for Dyeing Cotton Fabric
(Addis Ababa University, 2019-06) Ebuy, Werede; Anuradha, Jabasingh (PhD)
A further usage of peels from orange as natura dyes is presented in this paper. Natural dye is generally applied in an aqueous solution, and requires a mordant to improve the fastness of the dye on the fiber. Because of its good affinity, brilliant colours, nontoxic, non-allergic nature on textile materials, easy accessibility and less damaging effect on human health, it can be used in food, pharmaceutical, and textile industries. The aim of this study is to valorize orange peels for dye synthesis and to evaluate its yield. Orange peel is used as a raw material for the extraction of natural dye using soxhlet extraction method. Design of experiment for RSM was used to analyze and optimize the effect of extraction temperature (65°C, 72.5°C, and 80°C), extraction time (1.5h, 3.25h and 5h) and orange peel to ethanol ratio (0.05g/mL, 0.075g/mL and 0.1g/mL) on extraction of natural dye from orange peels. A maximum yield of natural dye of 40.109% was achieved under selected optimal conditions with high value of combined desirability a threevariable, three-level Box-Behnken design was used to develop a statistical model. From experiment, the yield of natural dye was obtained as 40.106%. FTIR and UV-Vis spectrophotometric studies were performed on the dye extract. The dyes produced were applied on cotton fabric and Na2CO3 was used for fixing the color on the fabric. Colour dyeing and testing were carried out using data color tool analysis (L*, a*, b*) and fastness properties of dyed cotton fabric were investigated according to AATCC-61 and crocking ISO 105×12.
