Item A Measurement-based Quality of Experience Model for Mobile Video Streaming: A Hidden Markov Model Approach(Addis Ababa University, 2025-12) Amel Salem Omer; Dereje HailemariamDemand for mobile multimedia services is rising; as a result, operators routinely monitor network performance using Quality of Service (QoS) metrics such as latency, throughput, and packet loss. While these metrics indicate network performance, they do not fully reflect end-user experience, particularly under fluctuating signal strength, bandwidth constraints, and diverse usage conditions. Though difficult to measure, Quality of Experience (QoE) captures users perceived service quality, which determines their satisfaction and loyalty. The gap between measurable QoS and subjective QoE remains a key challenge, and bridging it is vital for improving service delivery. This dissertation addresses the QoS–QoE gap using a data-driven, machine-learning approach based on data collected from a Mobile Network Operator (MNO). For mobile video streaming, it proposes a Hidden Markov Model (HMM)-based model to predict user-perceived QoE from measurable QoS parameters. A custom Android-based data collection mobile app, called iNET, was developed to collect synchronized user-side network metrics and subjective feedback from 550 users across different devices, usage times, and locations in Addis Ababa. The data are used to build a QoS to QoE mapping model. The modeling builds on our earlier experience in analyzing network accessibility, retainability, and congestion using Markov Chain and HMM based models trained on real-world datasets from an operator’s Network management system (NMS). This experience was vital for the proposed QoS-to-QoE mapping, which is the core of this dissertation. Central to QoS–QoE mapping is identifying the hidden and observable state in the HMM. QoE is typically latent from an MNO perspective, which aligns with treating it as the hidden state in HMM terminology, while network-side QoS metrics as observations. However, in the real system, QoS conditions influence QoE, which can motivate modeling QoS as the underlying hidden state and QoE as the outcome. This creates a modeling paradox between adhering to HMM emission terminology and reflecting the causal behavior of the QoS–QoE process, and it similarly affects whether QoS should be treated as hidden or observable. Accordingly, we evaluated both formulations by alternately treating QoE and QoS as hidden states and comparing their empirical performance. As the HMM requires a single sequence, we applied Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to reduce the dimensionality of QoS features and then used K-means to quantize them into a single cluster-label sequence. The HMM-based model achieved 98.04% accuracy, outperforming baseline Random Forest (96.15%) and Support Vector Machines (SVM) (49.03%) models. The results show that HMM-based modeling enables accurate QoE prediction and highlight the potential of the iNET measurement tool for use by MNOs.Item Mapping QoS to QoE Using Hidden Markov Models: A Case Study on Virtual Internet Service Provider Networks(Addis Ababa University, 2025-06) Betelehem Getu; Dereje HailemariamFor Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and virtual ISPs (vISPs), accurately understanding and measuring Quality of Experience (QoE) is essential, yet doing so is a challenging task because they have relied solely on technical Quality of Service (QoS), which fails to capture the true QoE perceived by users due to the user-centric, individual, multidimensional, and multisensorial nature of QoE. Therefore, this has led to the evolution of existing predictive models that map QoS to QoE. However, they are often limited in capturing sequential patterns or hidden transitions in user-perceived quality over time. This thesis proposes a Hidden Markov Model (HMM)-based approach to model the mapping between QoS parameters and QoE metrics using objective data and a composite of the two (objective and subjective data) for both ethio telecom and vISPs (Websprix IT Solution PLC and ZERGAW Cloud). The Baum-Welch algorithm was used to train the model, and its performance is compared against Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) models. The results of the study convincingly demonstrate the performance scores of the HMM prediction model with 99% RF with 96%, and SVM with 71% accuracy, which outperforms the SVM and RF models. Also, HMM had around 100% in all precision, recall, and F1- score, particularly in scenarios with high network variability characteristic of vISP networks. These findings highlight the potential of HMMs for improving QoE prediction in service provider networks and supporting more user-centered service optimization strategies.Item Teachers' Perceptions on Principals' Leadershipstyles and Their Impact on Job Satisfaction and Instructional Practices in Private Primary and Secondary Schools in Gulele Sub City, Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2025-06) Dereje Hailemariam; Zenebe BarakiThe primary Purpose of this research was to investigate teachers' perceptions of principals' leadership styles in private schools located in Gulele Sub City, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and examined how these styles impact teacher motivation, job satisfaction, instructional practices, and student outcomes. A mixed-methods approach was employed, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data. A survey questionnaire was administered to 200 teachers across three private schools, with data analyzed using SPSS Version 25 to assess means and standard deviations for various leadership styles. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 teachers, allowing for thematic analysis to identify recurring themes regarding principals' leadership practices. The study revealed that principals predominantly exhibited transformational and instructional leadership styles, which were associated with strong teacher support and engagement. Quantitative analysis indicated a consensus among teachers on the positive influence of transformational leadership on job satisfaction and instructional practices, while transactional leadership styles received lower mean scores, indicating a perceived lack of motivation and engagement. The qualitative findings highlighted key themes such as the importance of communication, empathy in leadership, and participatory decision-making. The conclusion drawn was that transformational leadership enhances teacher motivation and job satisfaction while positively impacting instructional practices, ultimately leading to improved student outcomes. Schools led by principals who adopt supportive and collaborative leadership styles demonstrated better academic performance among students. It was recommended that in order to foster a positive educational environment, it is essential for principals to adopt flexible leadership strategies that align with teachers' needs. This research aims to inform policy and practice within private schools in Ethiopia, promoting the development of leadership frameworks that prioritize teacher engagement and student success.
