Item Knowledge, Attitude and Practicies of Preparatory Students About Land Degradation: The Case of Eastern Wollega Zone of Oromia Regional State(Addis Ababa University, 2010-04) Bekuma, Teka; Dalelo, Aklilu(PhD)The goal of environmental education is producing responsible citizens by equipping them with adequate environmental knowledge, attitude and skills. With the intention that as future scientists, land managers and policymakers, the students will be able to provide knowledge based solutions to the environmental problems, this study aimed at investigating their knowledge, attitude and practices about land degradation. The research design was a descriptive type of study utilizing survey method. The subjects of the study were 330 students from three preparatory schools who were selected by using proportionate stratified random sampling methods. For data collection environmental knowledge test, attitude scale and rating scales on frequencies of students’ participation in environmental practices were used. Data analysis was made by using frequencies, percentage, mean, standard deviation, T-test and correlation coefficient. For variables of the study, comparisons were made in terms of gender, place of residence and academic streams. The findings of the study illustrated that students’ environmental knowledge and attitude is fair but generally poor in environmental practices. Environmental practices were not inline with their level of knowledge and attitude. Concerning academic stream there is no significant difference in their environmental knowledge and attitude. In accordance with other researches, males and rural students were more knowledgeable about land degradation. The relationship among students’ environmental knowledge, attitude and practices were found to be weak. Finally ways of improving students environmental practices such as maintaining the proportionality of the objectives of environmental knowledge, attitude and practices, organizing fieldtrips and giving due attention for practical parts were recommended
